General 2box Drumit 5 forum / Re: factory reset

if you only deleted the kits, then the actual samples should still be there. so rather than downloading the whole module contents, try installing a new copy of the DrumIt.dkit file (which is a small file). you can get it here:

that exploded diagram looks like the first MK I revision, where the rim trigger hoop was actually made from aluminium. however because of the design, they were prone to cracking, and plastic is now used instead.

i absolutely agree that the 2Box kit is good value for money overall, however the rim trigger system is definitely a weakness. the rim triggering is inconsistent and the design is prone to breakage (of the retaining o-rings, the plastic hoop that transmits vibration to the piezo, and the soft rubber attached to the plastic hoop that absorbs the energy of rim hits).

i very much doubt that the rim trigger system of that pad that was run over by the car was undamaged afterwards.

the latest edition of Sound on Sound (Jan 2013) has another design for an isolation riser, which apparently is very effective. it's two sheets of MDF with a layer of Green Glue in-between, sitting on top of two sheets of acoustic foam. high density Rockwool is supposed to work also, instead of the foam.

besides which, where are you going to get these > 99 layer drum samples from???

i have no idea what is going on, but i can say that 2Box appear to have been plagued with manufacturing and distribution issues since the Drumit Five was announced, which from memory was two or three years before the first kits were actually available in 2009.

i literally waited for years for my kit, which was one of the first batch. even now, over 4 years after release, it isn't easy to get spare parts.

DrumIt 5 Hardware / Re: Replacement HH stand for 2-box

the Gibraltar no-leg stands are really good too. there are a few different models with different pull mechanisms (i use a Liquid Drive)...

it is completely normal behaviour for each hit to generate a very short MIDI note. drum sampler software on your computer will assume this kind of MIDI input.

if you are trying to play other kinds of virtual instruments you will need to tweak their settings.

assuming you are trying to get the best audio quality, then IMO if you are recording you are better off recording the MIDI and recording the output from BFD, not from the 2 Box module, the final product will be much better. it doesn't make much sense in terms of audio quality to create DSNDs from BFD which you then record from the module. for starters you are introducing two more digital->audio audio->digital conversions. the sound quality from the outputs of the 2Box module is decent, but it's not great.

if your system is not good enough to do that and monitor with low enough latency, then you could generate the DSNDs so that you can monitor the actual sound directly from the module while also recording MIDI on your computer.

outputs 1-6 on the 2Box module are mono outputs.

the two front panel inputs on your Quad-Capture are definitely mono inputs (like almost all audio interfaces). the total of 4 inputs of the Quad-Capture includes the two channel coaxial digital input on the rear panel.
#101
almost all audio interfaces for music production have mono inputs, so you would use at least two inputs to record.

when recording audio from the 2 Box module, the most straightforward way is to use a pair of outputs, usually outputs 1 & 2, going in to a pair of inputs on your audio interface. you can of course set up fancier routing and record more than two outputs if you have spare input channels on your audio interface.

you can also record from the headphone output of the 2 Box module, but to do that you need a stereo -> left/right mono adaptor.

if you are going all out and recording using all possible outputs from the 2 Box module, you can have 8 separate channels going at once. you could have kick, snare, cymbals, etc on separate channels so that you have more control over processing the recordings in your DAW.
#102
the sounds from the 2 Box module are set up to work in stereo. if you are only recording from Output 1 then you are only recording the left channel, so yes the sound quality will be much reduced.

you should use another cable to connect Output 2 to a second input on your Quad-Capture.

also, make sure that you have panned the two Quad-Capture inputs to hard left and hard right.
#103
ah, Fast Track Solo?

by default the 2Box sounds are panned in a stereo field. so i guess you are only recording either the left or right channel, hence the weak sound.

you could sum the two sides into a mono signal before hitting your Fast Track Solo, or you could change the setup of the drums in the 2 Box module to give a mono output.

however, you are much better off buying another interface that has at least two inputs.

the firmware of the 2Box module must be getting confused by some of the metadata files and folders that OS X generates by default. it should be straightforward for 2Box to tweak the firmware to simply ignore those...

the file doesn't have any special content, in fact in most cases it is an empty file. it's the name that is important.

one way to recreate the file is this:

  • insert the card into your Mac
  • fire up a Terminal window (Terminal is in /Applications/Utilities)
  • navigate to the root level of the card by typing: cd /Volumes/TheNameOfYourCardHere
  • type the command: touch .metadata_never_index

the touch command will create an empty file with the specified name. note that that leading '.' on the filename is crucial (it makes a hidden file on OS X).

the presence of that file tells OS X not to do any Spotlight indexing or other metadata operations on the card.

if you are a Mac user who frequently uses Windows volumes, then BlueHarvest is a good tool for automatically keeping them free of special OS X files and folders...
