Don't you find that in live conditions, or simply playing with a band, the volume of the toms is too light?

Too light, or with not enough relief, or not enough high frequencies?

When I play with a band, I always find that we can't hear the toms enough. they are covered by the other instruments.

Isn't that the same with acoustic drums?
Certain mid frequencies (coming from the bass guitar, synth and growling female singer) push aside the toms. Instruments with high frequencies (like cymbals and snaredrums) are easier to hear.

Some solutions:
- set the toms volume to max and all the other instruments at a lower volume level
- take tomtoms with a decent attack like the maple toms
- look at the equalizer/mixing console and add frequencies at 1.6 kHz and 4 à 5 kHz, while reducing frequencies at 100 - 200 Hz
