due to money issues and also due to the existence of sdse (that will help us choose the right drum sound for our album with ease), we are really considering of recording at home. the biggest concern is the the drums. but if there was one drumkit that could live up to the task , itd be 2box
so we are thinking of trying it in a couple of months or so.

so id like to get some feedback

the most significant question right now is this:
record the drums in midi?
or record the drums through the 6 outputs in wav? (recording in wav though would be tricky since it would require us to buy a sound card of six inputs...or isnt it needed?)

apart from that any other tips? did you guys had issues with double trigering etc? did you do something special that helped you?

just need some advice from people that have been there!!! cheers

once evrything is set up, i could even make some videos of the recording sessions!!!!!

cheers

Hey,

some time ago i did some recording just for fun. I used the 6 outputs and MIDI simultaneously. If you don't have a multichannel soundcard you can also record MIDI only. Then you can either use SD on the computer or playback the Sound through the module again and recorfd channel per channel.

If you have just 2 inputs on your soundcard route snare and kick to separate outputs and playback the MIDI file through the module and record it. Then you route Tom1 and Tom2 to the outputs, playback the MIDI file again and so on and so on. Finally you got all components on separate tracks. Of course its more effort than just using SD directly.

Yes. I purchased the 2box for his exact purpose, but more for live electronica. Here is a recording straight off the desk (live): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBqDiGda11M

As for more of a rock band set up, I haven't tried it, although with the right samples mixed at the right level and the right outboard compression, even a 2 channel take can sound great. And that's the key - compression. The 2box sounds quite airy so squashing the bejesus out of the output signals is vital IMHO.

I always run a hardware comp over the subgroup live and when I'm in the studio I do hardware and software comps. Where an instrument gets lost in the compression I just run a separate channel for it (eg kick or snare) and multitrack.

But yeah, compression, compression, compression.

For recording the main advantage to recording your performance via MIDI is that you are able to change the drums easily later. So you might love the drum sound that you chose from your 2Box module but later you change your mind or the band or the producer, etc. etc.... want a different sound .... you can easily pick new VST sounds.

Having loaded your module with great VST sounds and able to play those straight out of the 2Box module is a great advantage, especially for live performance. But for recording most like to have a MIDI performance if possible.

Ideally if you were to record 8 direct outputs (you can use up to 8 direct outs) and also record the MIDI performance at the same time ..... you got it all!
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)
