Hello everyone

I'm new to this forum and I'm not a 2box owner myself, but my church has orded a module so I feel like I'm entitled to be here.

The other day my friend Johan and I sampled my younger brother's drum kit and his hihat. I then created some dsnd-files to use with the 2-box. The only problem is that I haven't had the chance to try the samples out for real yet. Maybe you could help me? I don't know if the samples, which sound like the kit feels anything like it. So please let me know and please keep and use the samples if they are in any way useful.

The drum set is a 5 piece Pearl Ex Export (22", 14", 10", 12" and 14") and the hihat a Zildjian Mastersound 14"
Recorded with 2 Rode M3 as ambience microphones going through a Universal Audio DCS Remote Preamp and a Shure sm57 close to the source through a Golden Age Projects Pre-73 as well as a AKG D112 on some sources. Also used a Beta 58 under a blanket placed under the drummers seat pointing towards the drums (to get a bit more roughness i guess).

Here's a link to the files:

Hi Andreas and Welcome to the Forum!  :patbat2box: You already bypassed beginner status and went straight to the ADVANCED 2Box user category.  :drum2:

I downloaded and tried this out on my 2Box kit. It plays and sounds pretty good.

Here are a few really minor suggestions:

1. There was a lot of initial silence/latency in the .dsnd files. That can easily be remedied with DSoundTool. With DSoundTool you simply click Edit, Trim Initial Silence and then Save and your .dsnds have 0 Initial Silence. I did that with your files I downloaded.
Here is a link to DSoundTool, in case you haven't seen it:
http://www.shortestpath.se/dsoundtool/download.html

2. On the Hi Hat Foot Pedal sound: Instead of recording the foot chick sound, it would prolly be better to record the foot Splash sound. The dsnds do not need the foot chick sound because the 2Box module will automatically interpret that from the HH closed samples. But the Foot Splash is not so. If you record the foot Splash for your dsnds you will get both type of foot closed sounds depending on whether you close the hat solid or Splash the hat.

3. More velocity layers. I would suggest more velocity layers, not as big of a deal on the toms, but on the snare (Head Zone) ..... it would play a little more naturally if you added maybe 10 or 20 velocity layers, that way the velocity differences in your transitions will flow a little better. Don't get me wrong, the snare is good, just a suggestion for a slight improvement. You actually don't need more velocity layers really, just more med and high velocity hits compared to the super light hits IMO.

Overall, very good job though.... Jerry
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

Oh, and I went ahead and uploaded your kit complete in a Zip folder to my storage space. The dsnds have the Initial Silence removed so there is no initial latency. I raised the rim volume also, just my pref. bringing the rimshot to a more equivalent level to the head IMO. I also included a .dkit file for the whole kit that substitutes your instruments in the new 2Box Red Sparkle kit.... that way you can add the whole folder plus the .dkit file to your existing module and have an entire kit already ready to drop in and play.

Here is a link to that Zip:

Thank you very much for the help Jman

It's quite a bit different from recording a performing drummer, so it's really a great challenge for me sampling every drum separately. I'll probably do another version of the kit, or some other kit when we'll get the 2box for our church. I'll probably get a real drummer to capture the dynamics as well. Neither me nor Johan knows how to get an even amount of dynamic steps.

Is there a lot of other people that have sampled their kits and don't mind sharing? We're planning to have an all-round "go to kit" with a natural rock/pop sound with a lot of "realness". Any suggestions?

I remember another member posting a few recorded kit samples, but no..... not many people posting recordings of their kits. The 2Box kits that are already in the module are real kits though that have been sampled. Along with the extra kits added to the 2Box website. Also, in case you haven't seen it, there is a very large resource for adding kits to the module from VST drum software. Here is a good thread for a one click option of that:
http://www.2box-forum.com/index.php?topic=1544.0
It requires a little investment for software, Vst program, etc. But an excellent option for sure.

Like I mentioned above, the kit you built is good and definitely usable/playable. Those were just suggestions that could help along the way.

Several of the stock 2Box kits in the module are very usable for what you want. If you haven't received the new module yet you may want to just wait. I believe it may already have the Tama Warlord kit on it plus the Red Sparkle kit, Cube Beech kit .... newer 2Box kits that are already available for download from the 2Box Website. So, in other words you may find everything you want already in the module or available as extra kits on the 2Box website. You will just need to sit down and turn the dial and listen. J

Thanks Moonsson & JMan for your efforts.

After I played your Export kit I just had to go for my own first sampled drum set.

It´s pretty raw compared to your recordings since I only had a Zoom R16 with internal Mics to go for.
Tuning on the drums is inexistent, but I really wanted to see how the whole thing would work out before spending even more time with it.

Here it is:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1mlChPsEXkpR3ZsS2dWakljbnc/edit?usp=sharing

It´s a Tama Starclassic Birch (1995)
10x10, 12x11, 14x13, 16x15 Toms
24x18 Bass Drum
14x6.5 Snare Drum

Cymbals:
Meinl Meteor 20 Ride
Sabian HH China 18
Sabian AAX Medium Crash 18
Anatolian Ambient Crash 17
Sabian HH Thin Crash 15
Paiste 505 Hi Hat 14
Paiste 3000 Sound Edge Hi Hat 13

Extras:
14x5 Starphonic Aluminum
14x9 Premier Heavy Rock Nine

I included a picture in the zip which shows the set with the Premier Snare Drum.

Heads during recording were Evans G2 coated as batter, Remo Diplomat clear as reso.
Bass: Emad2
Premier: Aquarian High Energy
Starclassic Birch Snare: Evans Genera HDD coated

Let me know what you think and how I can improve for the next version of the kit, which I´m sure I´ll do sometime.
