I actually do use all three zones on the ride when I play jazz.  What are you using for a hi-hat controller?

I'm using Meinl acoustic hi hats which are dampened and I moved the 2box PCB into a box below the hi hat stand pedal (Gibraltar model), and glued a magnet to the bottom of the chain. As a controller it works even better than the standard 2box hi hat and I'm really pleased with it.

So you have piezos on your Meinl hats?  Do you split the input and run one in from the hats and one in from the controller box you made.

Yes, I bought one of Jman's A to E hi hat sensors that he has for sale. It gives you edge and bow zones just like the 2box setup. This fits to the top hi hat cymbal. He also supplies vinyl dampening sheets for both top and bottom hats, so all you need is a small box, a craft magnet and two jack female sockets to complete the conversion.
