BURNIN AMBITION

hi there. i didnt know if i should make th thread in this forum as we are more of an e-drum community, but nevertheless, here it is

i used to play vic firth 7a and 7an. i really like these sticks. but they are too short and now i decided to choose something else. so after checkin all sticks of vic firth vater and promark in their sites, looking for a stick that has nylon tip, is long (at least 16 inches) but has a diameter as a7a stick, (or slightly bigger), i decided to try the pro mark mike portnoy sticks
7a, with 16 and  1/8 , length with big awesome nylon tip. i practised a bit at home with them and then used em in our groups last rehearsal. the nylon tip was awesomew, it made the cymbals sound even better, everything was cool
but after 15 minutes of playing, i noticed something

it was as if all vibrations from the stick, were sent directly to my hands. i was in pain and couldnt play any more with them. luckily i had my vf sticks with me and played with them. after 45 minutes i gave em a try and still i felt pain. my dryuum teacher told it could be  cause thir weight is no more balanced towards the tip of the stick than usual, cause of the big neck they have, but still i am afraid to use em. physics wise, i guess that probably cause of the neck not being way thinner than the shaft, the vibrations can travel easier?

this hasnever happened to me before... i dunno what to do. (probably i will throw the sticks in the fire place but it is a shame)... and i dunno why this happens. so iask. has anyone seen nything like that before? is it common? is there anything i could do? thanx

Kalimera BA, tikanis? I'm from The Netherlands and my Drum English is 'spotty'.

Can you be more specific about the pain? Was it muscle pain because your muscles were overstressed by different sticks with more weight then your hands are used to handle? Or do the longer sticks have a rebound that hits back on your wrists and finger joints. How is your grip? Do you have a tight grip or a loose grip? The loose grip is the best because it prevents too much force bouncing back into your wrists. Your teacher should be able to draw a stick out of your hands without problems, that is the best grip. And how do you hit the drums? Let the stick do the work, do not force the stick into the drumheads. I'm sorry if I write stuff you already know.  ;D

So, if it is cramp/muscle pain you might be able to train and improve your muscle strength, if the bounced force hits you hard on the new stick you might have to sell or burn them.

Zildjian sells sticks with some sort of shock-absorbing system in the stick. Check this out on:
http://zildjian.com/Products/Drumsticks-and-Mallets/Anti-Vibe-Series/7A-Nylon-Anti-Vibe

QuoteAnti-Vibe is also great for use on rubber electronic drum pads and practice pads due to the vibration caused by these impact surfaces. the stick feels like you are hitting its sweet spot on every stroke.

I started playing drums with 5A sticks (aren't we all) and at up tempo beats my hands started to cramp after 5-10 minutes because 5A is too thin for my hand palms. Switched to 2B's and all is well. To conclude my answer: Balbex sells Hornbeam sticks, slightly lighter sticks (and cheaper sticks because the material grows in Europe). That may also solve part of your problem. Lighter stick - less force feedback.

Take care B.A., good luck.  :animal:

thank you mate. no problem with my grip, but thanx for pointing these things out. they can help new people in drumming for sure. my grip is relaxed. i have played with all sort of sticks and this is something that has never occured to me before. and i cant say i am a hard hitter. onm the contrry. all the vibration from hitting  the hi hat or snare or toms went straight into my wrist and fingers. i could feel it. and i am so relaxed that sticks leave my hand more often than i would want to...
i googled the sticks and i could only find good things about them. so i dunno what wrong here. the sticks are exactly how i would make my dream sticks... and now i think i should throw em off... i will give em one more try in our next rehearsal but thats that.  thanx about theinfo on vibration absorbing sticks, but i dont want to go to that area... id rather stick with my 7a vic firth that are awesome. if only they were half an inch longer...anyway thanx
i will get back to this after my next rehearsal

See if you can pick up some Vic Firth 8DN sticks, I switched to that size from 7AN ... they are just like the 7's but longer, I love em, J
