Using the Hi-hat pad as a cymbal pad

I bought an extra hi-hat pad from a damaged kit with the idea of using it in the Cymbal 3 port as a second crash.

Only problem is it triggers whatever cymbal sound I use as a closed sound like a closed hi-hat.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to use it as a cymbal pad to trigger crash sounds?  I realize it won't be 3 zones but doesn't matter for the crash.

Any assistance would be much appreciated!!

Thanks Homie G

hi

there is an extra electronic device in the hi hat pad .... for the control of the sound ; it works with a magnet sensor , and is wired to the RING of the TRS jack ...

the edge switch is also wired to the RING ... this switch is used for triggering the edge sound of the hihat  , the crash sound and also to choke the sound for cymbals ...
the sensor device must have some resistance , so the 2BOX brain "sees" that the circuit is closed , and chokes the sound....

...  i guess if you remove or simply rewire the circuit in order to bypass the magnet sensor , you gonna make it act like a regular 2box cymbal , even with 3 zones control ( for this , the piezo sensor has to be located under the bell , i dont know if it s located there on the hihat pad ...)

I wont tell you  what to do exactly , as i m not sure , but i think that simply wiring the cable coming from the swich directly to the ring of the jack plug should work...

It s safer to wait for Manfred s response , he knows how those stuff are wired and will help you with pleasure....

                             happy neu Jahr Manfred !!!

here are some  posts from Jman and Manfred where you can see what the circuit looks like ...

Definitely wait on Manfred's reply, he is our resident 2Box Hi Hat Guru! Seriously, he is a wiz on all things electronic.

If you have a TS cable instead of a TRS cable, you might try that to see if you get a single zone open sound....
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

Ok ... I don't have a 2Box HH cymbal, but Manfred's box works on the same principle. I tried a mono cable and got the Choked sound you mentioned. But when I changed the trigger type to Kick or one of the other Non Cymbal type triggers it worked for the open sound.

I also tried this with TRS cable. This also worked. You can at least use it as is for single zone by simply changing the trigger type and setting the sound you want.

..... with a simple TS jack the choke will still be enabled ....  if you want to at least have a single zone without choke , you will need a TRS to 2xTS , plugging the TIP jack to the HH pad ...

like this one , but longer ;)

using the cymbal input with a mono pad is not so straightforward than it looks :  because you will get bow and bell sounds if you hit loud ... But you can  change which zone is triggered in the kit mode and chose crash ...

By the way , rewiring is worth the try , because if you want a crash sound , and that s what want from a mono pad in this case , you ll have to reprogram the right zone for every kits ....  and that is long and boring !!!

Yes, many of the crash, or the ride dsnds in the module have the Bell sound on the upper layer, so it seems that is what you will get for a single zone pad. Some of them, like Chinas you are good with, and probably all the splashes, any of the percussion sounds I presume... etc ... But like you say, rewiring, bypassing the hall sensor should make it possible to use this as a standard cymbal with bow, bell, edge and choke...

.... Happy new year Jerry ! :)

And to you too my friend!

Hey, speaking of that HH in this thread, maybe he would be better off just selling the hat and buying a dif. crash, since those 2Box Hi Hats are a pretty popular item and worth more resale wise than a crash.  :)

you re right , it s more clever to do that !   as any 2 zone cymbal will make a decent crash cymbal .... and with the extra money he could even buy another mono cymbal  or some 2ply meshheads ....

nice one Jerry!

.... so , HomieG1 , i think you have plenty of solutions now :)

Hi everyone.  thanks so much for all your suggestions, most appreciated!!  In relation to the suggestion of selling the hi-hat pad and getting a cymbal pad that would be great!

Only problem is that there are so few people here (New Zealand) with 2Box.  I only know of one other and the distributor carries no parts.

So if anyone out there is interested i would be happy to trade the Hi-hat pad for a cymbal pad.  The only concession for the value difference would be if who ever was interested would be prepared to pay the freight which wouldn't amount to much.

Anyway let me know.

Extra 2box cymbal pads and tom pads plus cymbal clamps, tom clamps etc are now available from musicplanet here in nz  :D

there is a board in this forum wher you can sell your stuff , and maybe find a second hand cymbal...

http://www.2box-forum.com/index.php/board,5.0.html

if not , any 2 zone crash could work ... there are some posts here about compatibility....  even 50€ millenium triggers works great as a crash ...

http://www.2box-forum.com/index.php/topic,1180.0.html

i use a 30€ roland pd8 2 zone for one  cymbal , and  crash & choke are working....

Its very simple--use a splitter cable and trigger the 'Rim" as a cymbal

HomieG1

So, excuse my technical ignorance.  You plug one of the splitters into the Cymbal 3 port the other goes where?

there s no rim in a cymbal input ...  did you mean tom input ?
