General 2box Drumit 5 forum / Module's latency ....
September 27, 2011, 10:37:32 PM
Hello

Is there a possibility that a future software update could reduce a bit the latency ?   maybe close to 2 millisecond from pad hit to audio output ...

that would be really great

hi

here is a link to a wav file i wanted to share with you

... it s back in black "no drum" version...

Really nice to play with when you feel angry ...

Back in Black .wav

as it s a classic , and AC/DC are more than loaded with money , i think it s ok to share it .... (tom if not , just delete the post ...)

General 2box Drumit 5 forum / Cymbal polyphony ....
September 20, 2011, 04:34:47 PM
Hello

The modules polyphony is more than enough ... But in a case , it could be optimized ....

I ve found that if you hit the edge of the ride (crash ride sound) , and after you do a quick beat on the ride's bow , the sustain of the crash will suddently be choked when poliphony limit is reached ...( around 20 hits ..)

It s a  detail for sure ,but it gives an unnatural effect...

... Could it be possible to give a priority to the edge hits , so then the crash/ride sound sustains till the end ?

Again Deve , it s not a big deal ... just an idea  :patbat2box:

Hi there

Now that the module's OS is satisfying a large majority of users , 2box developers will certainly have more time to focus on the KIT/SOUND EDITOR software ....

So lets share the improvements we imagine and the stuff we  dont like ...

Hi

Since tonight i m the proud owner of the first DIY separate HI-HAT pedal for Drumit5 in the universe ....!!

in fact , Manfred did 99 per cent of the work , an i just drilled holes and put some tape.... :)

So after playing for a while in order to calibrate it right and to study its behaviour , i got an idea ....

Why not assigning a closed hihat sound to the "open" zone ?

Like if you had a drop clutch on as soon as you release the pedal totally when you play double bass .... ( i dont , but sometimes I feel a bit philantropic... ;)  )

Then i downloaded the EU14 hat from 2box website , splitted it with Dsoundtool , an recreated a new one , assigning the closed sound to the normal open zone....
I created one more half opened zone , where i inserted the former open sound ....

I m sure it could help some of you , and also digitalDrummer who asked for a closed Dsound for his Zendrum setup ... ;)

I   hope it also will inspire Deve for next OS release ....

It could be great to add a new hihat mode that would act like this ,triggering the close sound when pedal is depressed , without the need to rebuild each dsounds ... like a Vclutch ...

It will give also a better behaviour than making a dsound like i did , because when i open the hihat (to get the close sound :) ) the half open sound continues till its end ....
Not a big deal if you play metal i agree , but having the half open sound choked when you release the pedal would be even better IMO ....

So now that upload has ended , here is the link to DSOUND so you can test it and enjoy....

EdtcVclutch HiHat.rar

Have a good night and take care ... and answear the pole if yo like ...

....after some months of using , swapping , erasing adding dsounds , i think that the SD card will become fragmented...

Do we need to defragment it sometimes ?

Will it improve the playback latency ...?

hi

I find that the "multitap delay"effect present in the module , and the way you program it can be a bit confusing even if you are used to work with delays ...

Most of the times , people just need  a straightforward mono delay , with "delay time"/"sync+time signatures "and "feedback time"  adjustment ...  and a longer delay time .

Is it possible to imagine to add the 3 taps time to a bigger single tap ?

If you add to this a tap tempo function , that would be perfect ! ( at least for me :) )

The cherry on the cake would be a filter inserted on the feedback loop ... with possibility to chose between HIPASS , LOPASS  or SHELVING  . And a controle over frequency and resonnance ...

OK i know this could be a too large cherry for our orange cake's processor power , but it costs nothing to ask ....

It looks that  there is a lot less complains about cymbal triggering and bell detection since OS 1.20 release .... :)

Is it because of the holydays or because you are happy with it ?

...personally i am happy . I find OS 1.20 is really better than the previous , more tweakable and effective ...only weird thing for me is the click accent's shuffled velocity

Hi

DDT 2 ply meshheads are getting more and more expensive ....

i ve found those listed £6.50 in the UK and i d like to have some user comments ....

hi  dear 2boxers ,

Here s a little trick i found this week to have more cymbal sounds comming from the Drumit 5 module .

Many users have only 2 2box cymbals , and the third input stays unused ... Lets use it to play 3 diferent cymbal sounds , for example  a crash , a splash and a china ... I m sure many of you agree that having 3 zones on a china , a splash or a crash isnt really a must...

For this you ll need another module ,like a cheap ALESIS TRIGGER I/O or whatever you have , 3 mono cymbals pads and a midi cable.

Plug the extra cymbals on the extra module and assign their midi notes to E5 F5 and F#5 on midi chanel 10 . Then link the midi out to the drumit5 midi in ... you can notice now that you have the 3 zones played  on the 3 pads .

Then you ll just have to build your own DSND file with a crash a splash and a china or whatever you need on each zone .
You ll need DSOUNDtool to create it , on this soft you can make 3 zones cymbal sound .

This  trick can be usefull too for those who d like to have the Bell sound on an other pad to be sure they reach  this dammned bell each time they hit ... and there are a lot , if you ve read the forum the past few months ...
like this you dont have to waste a pad input on the 2BOX module , and in all the kits , the propper bell sound will be triggered  by the same pad  without the need of programming  it .... ;)

Finally , if you want to be able to choke the sound on those extra cymbals , it s possible with a bit of wiring :

lets say one of the extra cymbals has an edge switch . Then you can use this switch to choke the cymbals ( it will choke all the 3 sounds together because they are played from one DSOUND ).
Youll need to split the signal from this cymbal pad , so TIP/SLEEVE goes to the external module , and RING/SLEEVE goes to the DRUMIT5 CYM3 input .  Attention , a normal Y cable dosent work , the RING from the cymbal pad  has to be connected to the RING of the input. You can simply modify the cable , by soldering a stereo jack on the ring side and solder it properly...

It s a little bit of work , but it s a good way to make a crappy drum module play first class 2BOX dsounds and give a second life to old triangular rubber pads or DIY triggers ...  it s time to get your old OCTAPAD8 back from the attic...:)

Of course it s not just for cymbals , for example 3 conga sounds or any perc or FX could be added this way...

So thats all folks !

have fun , and share your new multiDsounds... :)

hi

Are the cymbals inputs compatible with dual input or do they have a different input wiring that makes it impossible ..?

the new OS 1.20 provides great improvements on cymbals ...  and opens the module so one can use different cymbal triggers ... that s really cool...

Could it be possible to have one more mode where cymbal input would act as a dual trigger  like toms or snare... for example , one with crash sound and a splash ... plus two 3zone cymbals

of course this can be done with a tom input ... but if i allready use 3 toms and a fourth one that plays loops ...

PS: it s so cool to finally have a looper inside !

General 2box Drumit 5 forum / new rubber heads ?
August 04, 2011, 05:24:05 PM
hi

on the new website , they are talking about "new rubber heads" but there is no links or infos on that ...

does anybody tried them , or have infos about price , playing quality or noise ?

hi there

I found some nice trick for the rim trigger ... i attached Two small piezo of 10mm to 2 little metal L bar , mounted like the crossbar design to a free snare or tom lug with a simple screw ... place one at 8 o'clock and one at 5 o'clock , just where you hit ... The signal is more powerful than if you mount the piezo to the shell , mostly when it is wood...

Here are some pics ...

to make it you will need this....

to do that ...

and stick it like that...

the domino really helps to have a steady connection , it s also easier to exchange the trigger if needed....
dont put foam between the metal bar and the shell in order to have the strongest trigger signal ....

IMO it s better to place two of those guys for a DIY snare drum or tom ... the metal bar can be smaller or have a different shape , i just took what i had ...

/// Five minutes of work and costs less than 2 euro :)

have fun...

Hi

This week i noticed something quite cool : You can make some editing like EQ or changing volume  in SOUND FORGE 9.0 and save them back directly as DSOUNDS.

In certain conditions , you dont even need to use Dsound tool ... all is done in soundforge  , all the layers are in the same file on the screen , you can scroll in the whole DSOUND into the same window ...

CASE ONE:

In fact ,as long as you dont modify lenght by pitch fro example or the sample layer's strucure , if you press save , the new dsound version will be saved in place of the old one ...
But if you do this , the best thing is to make a copy before , rename it , and use it for te editing ..; like this you dont loose the original one .

You have to do this also because SOUND FORGE 9.0 cant save the file as *.DSOUND ... if you use "save as" , you just can save it in *.wav . But if you just chose "save" , the file will be saved back as a dsound !!!

CASE TWO:

In case you need to modify the duration or the structure of the Dsound , like by pitching , streching , adding or removing layers , you can still do it , but you ll need to save the new dsound in *.wav ,  reopen it with DSOUNDTOOL and then save it as a DSOUND ...

I only tried the trick on simple perc and kick sounds ,  in  case you change the duration like in case 2 , I dont think it will works for sounds with 2 or 3 zones , because when you save them in *.wav , you ll  loose the zone and velocity sample's assignation ...
But i guess that if you just splitt the DSOUND in 2 samples (head samples & rim samples for a snare sound ) it would be easy to rebuild it in  dsoundtool as a 2 zone sound ...

If you use the case 1 , it should work for 2 and 3 zones Dsounds

Before this , i was thinking that for editing a dsound , you had to split it with in dsoundtool , then edit each slices one by one in an audio editor , save them one by one in *.wav , and finally reimport them all in dsoundtool and so on .... pffff...

This happens to be really faster ...

PS : Thanx to "nonodelatoile" , i tried this after i read his post on listening to  Dsounds using VLC mediaplayer ...

have a nice day folks ...

"In the next revision of the software ( to follow shortly ) there will be the
provision to allow the drummer to drag and drop any wave, aiff or rex files into the editor page. It will bepossible to make your own multi level sound or just download loops straight into the DrumIt Five unit."

.... this is in the 2BOX brochure , is it going to happend somedays ?

Drumit6 should have realtime control from a computer , via USB or Ethernet ...

- For fast transfering sounds
- Even using sounds from a networked hard drive
- total remote of the unit via a laptop , using an editor with a "Touchscreen friendly " graphical user interface ; multitouch laptops tablets or pads will cost 200€ or less in a few years..  and a unit with no expensive screen on the module is more economic to produce ... just something bigger than drumit5 display , and the pc editor for more serious editing... after all , with drumit5 , if you want to add sounds in the module or edit sounds , you allready need a computer ...

.. imagine that you can adjust the mix or the parameters without changing pages and scrolling on menus ... or even better , if the sound engeneer has the possibility to adjust the volumes of each pads via wifi , for instance , lowering a too loud cymbal , without the need to come on stage or interrupt your playing during soundcheck .
Also it would be possible to group more pads on a single stereo group , like toms percs and cymbals , if you still have the ability to control their individual volumes ...

And it s no need to have wifi support from the Brain , you just have to build a nettwork from the computer that runs the Drumit6 editor and the one of the technician , using a software like VNC .. this technique is allready used to remote digital mixing desks like yamaha M7 or PM5 who also have pc based online editor..

Also , next generation should have 24bits 96khz( or more...)  IN/OUT converters , that would provide 2X faster triggering , ( 4X if 192khz)

More IN/OUT:
- maybe 10 dual triggers + kick + some inputs for data changes like kit change tap tempo or start/stoping whatever you want via a pedal , a switch or a pad...
- 10 separate audio outs
EQ with lowcut on each output

Some serious Looping functions

Removable media for user sounds and onboard memory for standard kits and OS.

... of course this would need a lot of processor power , but in the future those wont be so expensive ...

Here s a little Dsound for those who want a clic sound without volume variation ... accent is replaced with a higher pitched sound ...

hi

i finally got my replacement card today ... it took one month for Musicstore.de to react :f.....g christmas...:)

Thanx to hyperactive , they sent me the SDcard the day after musicstore contacted them  ... they are "hyperREactive" ;)

But that s not the point...

Replacement is quite easy , but you have to be really carefull :

-on my module , the 5 bottom lid screws werent TORX as said on 2box website . There were PHILIPS screws instead , and some were really hard to unscrew. The metal thread (on the upper orange lid) are really fragile , and i damaged some just while unscrewing , ... now i have 2 screws that are quite loose ...

- inside the module , one  screws holding the circuit board to the upper lid was missing ... not a big deal , but a bit disapointing for a 1000€ gear...

so be carefull , and if you are not confident on doing this , send your module to the shop , if they "massacre" the screw threads , at least you will still have your warranty ...

The good side , is that now my module is not freezing anymore  ,and i can play all kits :drum3:

have a nice day folks
