To go from 2box with drums, cymbals etc. with an out assigned to each drum, going into a computer for recording what gear works the best? Want to record the drums, give the track with drums to be mixed with other music. The guy wants control over each drum with regards to mixing. Mentioned he was using Garage band, pro tools and a Mac. The idea he gives me the main tune and I supply the drum tracks. What gear would work good with this. Thanks.

General chit-chat / Joining 2 Box VST Club soon.
October 24, 2015, 03:36:07 AM
Used DDrums live for the last 5 years. Two of my modules failed probably age related. Impressed with Rolands TD-25 but before taking them out of the store thought I would revisit this forum and see what 2 Box has to offer. With some useful advice from JMan, the VST, and triggering aspects of 2 Box got me hooked. Found a company in Canada that ordered me a module thus hopefully by mid November I will be building a kit using 2 Box. Will be using it live with triggered acoustic drums mesh heads. Really enjoyed using DDrums for dynamics and sound and hoping 2 Box will out perform sonically my trusty Ddrum unit. Very impressed with Rolands TD-25, they have come a long way, but still hampered by lack of VST abilities. Positional sensing is a moot point vs VST useage. Hopefully VST is a bag of chips and dip as I could have bought a used DDRum module, as the onboard sounds, triggering and dynamics of the DDrum is great sounding live. Watching JMans Y Tube video's f the VST / 2 Box convinced me I am making a wise choice. In Nova Scotia, Canada it's Roland / Yamaha being sold via Music Stores thus 2 bx unmentioned. Been playing E Drums since the Simmons SD-7 days. I will have a few questions to ask once I get rolling, until then glad to be here.

General 2box Drumit 5 forum / Re: Canadian roll call?

Right now using a DDrum 4 but checking 2box out at L&M tomorrow. I use the DDrum 4 live. The module gave out last week at a gig, but had a back up DDrum 4 module. If I can cop a 2 box I'm in. Live in Halifax N.S., Canada.

Hey Jman! I was braging about your set up in the music store earlier today about your set up and how you are a serious technician with E Drums. Also to my old band mates when we go out and chat music. A lot of drummers I know still do not get it about E drums. i encourage them to check your cite out to display what is possible. Hard to get acoustic players converted.  I think Puttenvr was born with drum wisdom. We keep on rocking and it only gets better and better.  :patbat2box:

Just ordered Addictive Drums from the local music store.  I thank you guys for the info. This is a great drum forum with fantastic members. I see some of us have been around for a while on different forums from way back when. Great to be in the presence of such a knowledgeable and passionate group.

I will never trust a computer over a module. Computers lock, crash. The OS is more complex vs the focused OS for a module. The only true way to know if VSti is better vs modules is to try it live. And if it is, worth the effort. A 2 Box with a few samples  of superior drummer loaded may be the best of 2 worlds.

In my neck of the woods E drums took a while to catch on. was in the music store and only one guy heard about VSTi. He did not know any drummers using laptops for live gigging. I think for ruggedness, dependability drummers who use e drums prefer modules vs VSTi.
I go back to the Simmons SDS 7 days where I put Pizeo's in my toms and triggered them (1984). The Simmons snare was horrible so I used a regular snare. Then... TR-505 triggered them via Simmons TMI midi interface, but used acoustic snare. The TR-505 had 8 bit samples. As with my humble adventures in the 80's being the first user of the SDS-7's, will most likely be the first in my area using a laptop to gig. With that being said, my trust in computers is questionable, thus always bring 2 x modules regardless. I am paranoid of electrical stuff breaking.
If VSTi is a bag of chips and then some, I'll be more surprised than you. I like trying new things live and the worst thing will be an extra Mac laptop for music applications in my drum room. If it works good, I'll be hooked.
I do not think VSTi live will catch on bar band level, modules will always rule. I got to try this for poops and chuckles.

The following are serious thoughts to consider:

1. Plus: do we really hear the difference between a VSTi and 2Box sound live?
2. Plus: the computer,
3. Plus: the need of a decent soundcard (most computers run a standard sound chip on board)
4. Plus: the latency,
5. Plus: all the Windows problems

1. That is the most important aspect I am considering. One thought was to do a A /  B test live. A. The module, B. VSTi against each other. I have a ton of pads / modules and laptop to try this. be an interesting experiment. If the VSTi makes the clouds part and the sun shine be worth considering. If not the 2 Box would be a good upgrade from DDrum 4.
2. The computer. Mac computers run very stable, and Muse receptor also. But that being said less is more, modules are  even more stable.
3. PreSonus FireBox apparently works
4. PreSonus FireBox less than 3ms latency.
5. True, Windows = Problems, Mac = Stable, 2 Box = Super Stable

I am interested in VSTi since I never tried it.  Addictive Drums seem the most user friendly, and sounds great (on Ytube etc.). I find this area of drumming compelling. I am not an acoustic player anymore and an E drum hardcore type. when I do play acoustics it is a real treat. Thanks for all the great comments.

Great replies! Thanks. second question, what is a good program for live gigging that has good layering and dynamics? So far Superior drummer seems to be a favorite from my search. Steven Slate drums was recommended. A lot of choices. What do you use, and how do you find it live? You guys are great!

As a DDrum 4 user, I am attracted to 2Box since the triggering, sounds and unit have the best build and technology bar none. Was told a Mac Computer or Muse Receptor with software sound better than any E Drums be it DDrums, 2Box, TD-20 etc. I never used VST samples and have not compared the two. I am very impressed with my humble retro DDrum module, but as with anything, if 2Box better, or VST, may move in that direction. For example, a mac computer can handle as many samples pending hard drive size. With all this being said, I am into 1-2 good snare samples, 1-2 Tom samples, etc. Not a power user, as I believe less is more. Thus could potentially blow a lot of funds just to get a snare a "bit" better than what I have now. I use my e kit live, so try to keep my it simple sample / kit wise. I am not into a 100 different kits, just the best sound for live gigs. Triggering, dynamics and sound is my focus. Reverbs and gimmics such as my Yamaha DTX Extreme 4.0 kit doesn't turn me on vs the  DDrum 4's great triggering and dynamics abilities. Is the VST technology worth looking into? I cannot imagine VST's sounding better than 2Box as it's samples are higher fidelity quality vs DDrum (that sounds very nice also). Thanks for any responses.

The high hat looks like a Roland unit. How did you get it to work? Would be appreciated as to how this is done. All details grealy appreciated.

your music / Re: Great sound in video

Amazing! Now that's what I call a great sounding kit.Love the loop and playing. Excellent way to demo the unit, music is not burying the sound of the kit.  ;D  I must add to this post. The attack on the snare, the snare has a lot of character. I say this is the best demo of the kit I have listened to yet. This is the type of demo that I crank my head phones just to listen the drums / drumming again and again. The mix really shows off the drums. Brilliant use of a loop. I hate techno, but starting to like it after listening to this. This demo shines. 2 box has got it right!    ;D 10 / 10  ;D  My advise, for anyone wanting to know how 2box sounds, play this at high volume through your favorite headphones, and let the kit speak for itself.
