Hi.

The next OS will have different cymbal trig routines.
The sensing of cup versus bow was based on waveform analysis.
This relies on the cymbals having a consistent behaviour regarding the differences in waveform when being hit on the cup and bow.
(The edge trigger zone is always detected by a switch).
However, this system didn't prove reliable enough.
So instead the cup zone will now be detected by the fact that it has a much higher signal level (since it's right on top of the piezo). When the trig gain is at minimum, medium to hard hits on the the cup will trigger the cup zone, any hit on the bow will trigger the bow zone. However, weak hits on the cup will be interpreted as relatively hard bow hits.
In practice it turns out to play quite well, specially since bow will always be bow. Just make sure to play the cup relatively strong.

This change will make it easier for other cymbals to be used too. Generally they will (should) have an even signal level all over the surface, so if the sensitivity is set correctly, other cymbals should at least have a correct bow trigger, and if they have a edge switch, that should work too.

Deve.

Hi.
If you have boot version 1.30, you can update the DrumIt Five (probably shipped with OS 1.02) with a MAC. Just connect it by USB (hold down the left DATA button at power up) and drag'n'drop the OS 1.04 to the DrumIt drive.

If you have a first batch system with boot 1.10, you must first run the boot updater 1.30 from a PC with XP or Vista 32 bits.

Setup guides and tips / Re: List of sounds in module
January 27, 2010, 09:24:58 PM
Hi.

The sounds in the kits are not the point. Be creative, build your own kits :-)

To be honest, I don't have such a list. The kits were made by several people, to show the possibilities of combining sounds into a kit.  The kit names should not be interpreted too literally.

Also, the sound number is not significant. It's just the ordinal number for the alphabetically sorted sounds currently in Flash memory. The sounds in the kits are stored by name, not by ordinal number.

Regards,

Deve Loper.

ps. See ya at Frankfurt, Hyperactive booth.

Hi Louis.

Aren't you from Sweden?
Nice initiative this editor.
Maybe we should PM about the details of the dsnd format.

We do have our own plans for an editor, but we are short on resources.
But since it's open sound, all the better with your work!
Just be aware that the format might change in the future.

Hi.

Positional sensing can be done with the current DrumIt Five hardware.
However, you need a pad with the sensor in the middle.
Our next rubber pads will have this.
Sometime later on, I'll investigate the signal from the Roland pads as well.

The sounds itself are all built on an 8 zone structure.
Currently the cymbals use up to 3 and the snare / toms 2 zones.
But someone (?) who is stubborn enough and has the time (!), might record a multi-layer snare with 7 zones (the 8th being the rim). It'll be big though ... :-)

Next OS will have the ability to route each channel separately to the headphones left only, left and right, or right only (UNIT-NODE Out).
The headphone out (UNIT-OUT Phons) will then be selectable for the left / right signal pair.
That way you'll have 8 separate out.

(New OS due mid march before Frankfurt Messe.)

Hi Mandubien.

The idea is that
rm   -r   ._*
removes recursively.

Hi.

Please note, if files are deleted on the DrumIt Five by means of the Mac Finder, you have to empty the Trash to free up the space.

The fact that Mac writes ._ files seems difficult to avoid (Mac just needs to be a bit different than anything else, which is not the same as better...). However, they do not take much space and even when selected as drum sound, they'll just be silent. In the next OS version, I'll just ignore these files.

(This is for freaky users who like Unix stuff.)
If the earlier suggested way to show invisible files doesn't work, you can use the Terminal program to navigate with the cd command to the DrumIt Five drive.
(Note: these path arguments might be different on your Mac.)
cd /
cd volumes
cd "drumit five" (quotes needed)

Then you can type
ls -la
and see all files, incl the ._ ones.

Use
rm -r ._*
to remove them.

Since OS 0.36 there's been some page changes.
CONF is now NODE, where mix group assignment, audio out and MIDI is set up for each channel independently.
TEST and PADS is gone, these were for in-house test only.

I posted a block diagram here which shows the relation between pages and their function in the signal flow.

There's a ".metadata_never_index" file in the root folder of DrumIt.
It is supposed to suppress indexing from Mac Spotlight.
One can leave it there.

Other files with ._ can be removed, incl their folders.

Two more things.

1st, make sure you have boot 1.30 before doing ANY file copying to DrumIt.

It is advised to run a disk check too. Either by means of selecting Properties:Tools:Check Now on the DrumIt drive, or by running "chkdsk  /f  <drive>:" from a command prompt. For Mac there's probably something similar.

2nd, if you see a strange message when the OS starts like
FAT_S_0512_C_04k
(meaning a FAT with 512 byte sector and 4 kbyte cluster is detected),
you have a Flash drive with the wrong formatting.
Even though this is technically a correct drive format, for the purpose of playing sound files in DrumIt, it's not appropriate (sounds might distort). Unfortunately this might have happened on some units of the first batch.

If you succeeded in updating to boot 1.30 and the you have wrong drive format, you can reformat the drive to FAT32, 32 kbyte cluster and copy back all sound files. If anything fails, contact your distributor.

Hi.

Mac OSX seems (sometimes?) to copy ._filename to the DrumIt drive. Why, I don't know.
Any file having the .dsnd extension will show up on the KIT-DRUM page under Drum, and any file with .wav will show up on the KIT-SONG page under Song.

The validity of the file (correct format and header) is checked when it is selected under Drum or Song. If it's not compatible, the sound or song is not loaded and there will just be silence. Doing this format check for all files at start-up would take too much time, so that's why they appear in the list anyway.

Here's a link on how to see hidden files, so you can remove them.

http://www.macworld.com/article/51830/2006/07/showallfinder.html
http://www.macworld.com/article/142884/2009/09/106seehidden.html

Currently there's a limit of 256 files in the file list (.dsnd + .wav).
Each can be max 47 chars long, excl the .dsnd or .wav extension.
So if there's a ._ file for every normal file, some files might not make it in the list.

Also, there can be max 64 folders (incl root folder "/"), even if they are empty.
The complete folder path, like "/folder_1/.../folder_n/", can not be more than 63 chars.

I'll increase those limits in the next OS release.

Hi.

The boot updater is a quick hack, as it was never supposed to exist :-)
It's a waste of time for me to put more work on it, it does exactly what it should do as it is. For those of you with Mac or 64 bit Windows, I'm sure you can find somebody with a 32 bit Windows version somewhere (a netbook will do fine). It needs only to be done once, after that Mac, Win, Linux whatever will work to transfer files over USB.

The editor is being worked on by a consultant firm. The first version (due out beginning next year) will have the kit editor (drag and drop sound files on drum pad icons). It looks quite cool actually...
The second version will have a sound editor to make your own sounds. This will take some more time I'm afraid. Particularly since I need to implement a lossless sound compression scheme, both the encoding part in the editor and the decoding part in DrumIt, to make space for more sounds and to make downloading quicker (compared to the same sound uncompressed).

Regards,

Deve.

Hello all forum people.

Now things are finally moving forward, I thought it was time to say hello. It's been a long time coming, but I hope you all enjoy (or will enjoy) our DrumIt Five drum system. I'm sure my colleague (who is currently on a well deserved holiday) would agree.

We started this project (my colleague doing the business side and drum hardware and myself doing the electronics and software) to make a very competitive drum system with a new look and feel plus a drum module with a unique open sound architecture. Although there have been many hurdles on the way (and it took longer than anticipated), I hope you all appreciate the result. I've followed the posts on the forum ever since the first release this summer and I'd like to give you some background on some issues.

Due to certain circumstances, we had to ship the first batch with OS 0.36. This was actually a pre-release version. Also, boot code 1.10 had known problems writing files over USB, which I after many weeks traced down to a processor flag not being updated correctly (yes, processors ain't perfect either). Anyway, in boot 1.30 and OS 1.02 this is all fixed. So for those of you who own a DrumIt with boot 1.10, please update to boot 1.30 before writing any new files to the unit (see http://www.2box.se/pages/updates.html). To make sure the file system is correct, run a disk check as well. After that, it's safe to update the OS and download new sounds.

I've seen the wish list and most of the (software) stuff is on my list too! However, I'm only human and need some time off as well. But be assured, OS 1.02 is just the beginning. Since the OS update is so easy, I'll try to make new versions available as frequently as possible.

There are many more issues I could comment on, but I think Scottie has done a real good job here already. I'm in contact with him regularly about things popping up, so you will get an answer by means of the forum.

Also a big thanks to our distributors.

Best wishes to you all.
