Title: Drumit6 should have realtime control from a computer
Post by: edtc on April 11, 2011, 11:24:51 PM
Drumit6 should have realtime control from a computer , via USB or Ethernet ...

- For fast transfering sounds
- Even using sounds from a networked hard drive
- total remote of the unit via a laptop , using an editor with a "Touchscreen friendly " graphical user interface ; multitouch laptops tablets or pads will cost 200€ or less in a few years..  and a unit with no expensive screen on the module is more economic to produce ... just something bigger than drumit5 display , and the pc editor for more serious editing... after all , with drumit5 , if you want to add sounds in the module or edit sounds , you allready need a computer ...

.. imagine that you can adjust the mix or the parameters without changing pages and scrolling on menus ... or even better , if the sound engeneer has the possibility to adjust the volumes of each pads via wifi , for instance , lowering a too loud cymbal , without the need to come on stage or interrupt your playing during soundcheck .
Also it would be possible to group more pads on a single stereo group , like toms percs and cymbals , if you still have the ability to control their individual volumes ...

And it s no need to have wifi support from the Brain , you just have to build a nettwork from the computer that runs the Drumit6 editor and the one of the technician , using a software like VNC .. this technique is allready used to remote digital mixing desks like yamaha M7 or PM5 who also have pc based online editor..

Also , next generation should have 24bits 96khz( or more...)  IN/OUT converters , that would provide 2X faster triggering , ( 4X if 192khz)

More IN/OUT:
- maybe 10 dual triggers + kick + some inputs for data changes like kit change tap tempo or start/stoping whatever you want via a pedal , a switch or a pad...
- 10 separate audio outs
EQ with lowcut on each output

Some serious Looping functions

Removable media for user sounds and onboard memory for standard kits and OS.

... of course this would need a lot of processor power , but in the future those wont be so expensive ...

All that sounds very nice edtc, but essentially the device you are talking about already exists.  It has USB 3, Ethernet and Wi-Fi, hard disk and bags of CPU power.  Its called a PC  ;)

Seriously though, I think that 2Box are simply trying to bridge the gap between a hardware only solution and VSTi/PC, which is at the same time open source. That seems to be their modus operandi, and bringing that package to market at an affordable price (for a medium to high end system).

The success of the 2Box does not come from its complexity, or raft of high end features - it is born of simplicity.  Imagine the 2Box was Jaws (I know its a strange comparison, but it is my all time favourite movie):

Mr. Vaughn, what we are dealing with here is a perfect engine, an eating machine. It's really a miracle of evolution. All this machine does is swim and eat and make little sharks, and that's all.

To me, thats why the 2Box is so great.  All it really does is play drum samples, but it does this extremely well with low latency - at the same time, the system is still self contained and does not require a PC.  Which, in my opinion, is what the majority of drummers want, to just turn on the thing and get going.

The biggest mistake many musicians (pro and amatuer) fall into is buying into this constant technology arms race, that they need all this new stuff like wi-fi/tablet control/touch screen.  None of it makes you play better - I would wager there are hardly any members of this forum who would actually need to have access to all that tech.  Most of us are generally happy with the module and its features - more pressing concerns are fixing cymbal triggering or altering the cymbal design, and introducing the new positional sensing pads, and perhaps a memory card slot.

Then it really will be a miracle of evolution...

RIGHT

And those are also the reasons WE don't want a Roland module with al those bells and whistles
We want good sounds and a straightforward system
So, to desire Roland options on any forthcoming 2Box kit is useless imo

Why should you have 10 separate outputs for instance? Even on an acoustic drum kit every single cymbal never gets its own channel

I agree with both of you , in terms that simplicity is a crucial thing ...  and i thought that all i asked for was in this simplicity direction ... sure we dont need rythm coach or stuff like that ...

USB communication for MIDI , datas and remotevia an editor aren't gadgets for me , and this wont need something else than a usb2 port ... by the way , it s easier not to have to plug an extra pair of MIDI cables ...
and those who dont need editing via a pc , can just use the drumit as it is ...

Looping functions were announced in 2009 , so why cant we just have this feature ..?
Having a standalone system able to play some loops and backing tracks was part of my decision to buy the DRUMIT5 , and many EDrummers nowdays needs this ..

10 outputs ? for example:  1 clic ,2 Kick ,3+4SnareL+R , 5+6TOMS L+R , 7+8 cymbals+PERCS L+R , 9+10 LOOPS+back track , ... a lot of snare sounds are sounding better in stereo IMO...

A lowcut is nice if you use the kit with only a stereo out ... even with separate outs ,some tom sounds are "rumbling " a lot , and it s quicker to set a lowcut on the fly than having to edit the whole Dsound ...

I d love to have such knowledge Deve ... but it s far to be the case ...;)

... i really hope you are going to sell  enough kits for your company to go further in your research ...

Why the Drum It 5 has soooo much potential, are n't you people ever happy?.

Something which is miles better than any Roland or Yamaha e-kit, and your still not satisfied.

I give in!!!!!.

hi ,

it s not a question of satisfaction or hapyness , but as we know , the Drumit5 is limitated by it's processor power  and his USB 1 design, so i think it s better to note here the ideas that needs too much power or that needs hardware not present on the actual model...

... asking for a convolution reverb ,mp3 or tube compressors in the Drumit 5 whilst list isn't that more useless  ?...
... writing ideas here dont hurt anybody ... in fact I was thinking this , but now I m not really so sure of it ... :)

Why not take it to the next level? Three parts - pads, interface and brain:

Pads: No cables - talk to the interface wirelessly (no limit on total pads/triggers), powered wirelessly
Interface: Cable-free touchscreen UI for the brain. Transmits trigger data wirelessly to the brain, receives multi-channel monitor audio (realtime mixing, wireless audio output). Powered wirelessly.
Brain: Stores and processes the samples. Wireless I/O with interface(s - multiple supported). Samples loaded wirelessly or via high speed wired interface. Automated data backup/restore using internet services.

Drumit7? 3D positional tracking. Brain processes realtime video feeds to determine instrument, velocity and contact position. Automatically detects sticks, brushes, rods, mallets, hands, etc. Pads are optional (real air drumming).

It s not forbidden to dream...:)

... but it s also good to keep in mind that the costs of the technologies are conditionning the feasability of a commercial system ...

To me it is a nice change to have a drum module that is being supported with OS updates and improvements as well as additional sampled sounds being added for $0 .... That gets a huge TWO THUMBS UP from me .... So I would be happier if Drumit 5 continues to be the focus of 2Box for now. There are plenty of electronic drummers using other brands of edrum modules that make lists on the internet of what features they want in the next module, but those Edrummers know that they probably will not be getting any OS upgrades for free (maybe one expansion card or OS update before the next module release), probably no new sounds for free, and the only way they will be getting the features they want will be to buy the next model.

So for me I just hope as many of the upgrades that can be initiated into Drumit 5 will continue to come along and more sound samples (One pet peave: we do desparately need HH .dsnd's with more transitions, 10 or more instead of 4) .....
and I sincerely give a Hat's Off cheer to they way this company is supporting their product and customers .... a rare and well appreciated way of doing business! :patbat2box: :drum3: :drum2: :drum1:  J

I have owned a Yamaha DTXpress kit and sold it because it sounded awful, I then bought a Clavia Ddrum 4SE kit and loved it to bits, then I tried the 2 Box Drum It 5 and it blew me away, so I bought one and sold my Ddrum 4SE kit, if I am perfectly honest the need for a DrumIt6 is not what I would call important, what is important that you have spend £1,700 on a kit which basically does it all, so tell me what other kit does this for the price range?. Look at the Roland TD-30 OK its got nice bells and whistles but I still do not like the sound, but look at the price!!!!. What I am really getting at is this, we do not need a drumit6 yet, at least for another few years because other companies have not caught up with 2 Box, can you load your own multi-samples on a Roland Kit?, can you play your sounds on a Yamaha Kit, you can only use what is there, at least you can customise the DrumIt5 to sound the way you want it to, and use your own samples, and not a processed load of thin sounding crap modelled on how Roland or Yamaha think it should sound, thats why the DrumIt5 has so much potential and will have for quite a few years to come. When Bengt designed this kit he certainly knew what he was doing because look how long the Clavia Ddrum 4 kit stayed on the top spot for.....Years!!!! and nothing came close, he raised the bar with the DrumIt5, nothing will catch up with it at this price range, so there is no need for a Drum It 6 for ages yet. Long live the Orange Kit :-)

Well...since we're on the subject...sure there will be a need for a "6"...sooner or later...however as long as this hardware has the capacity for continual upgrades....I say max it out! When the hardware can no longer keep up with advanced OS...then revamp things.

Now with that said....I would like to see a full (single) control panel accessible from a computer screen with real time tweaking of all parameters and instant demoing rather than scrolling through the menus of that little screen. Now...realizing that once the card mod has been done that the USB port  is null and void...and provision must be made somehow...not being technically minded enough for the task...but with lots of ideas...here's mine....

How about an "add on" dock that has 10 more inputs....say...6 splittable and 4 cymbal. This unit needs to have an external card slot that supports a 64G card(future proofing) and a USB port that comes with a jumper to attach it to the present USB port in the module...plus...another USB port for direct computer connection. Everyone who has done the card mod could then "undo" it...and plug this dock directly into existing hardware via the USB port already provided. This could be the '5.1 Upgrade Dock"...after which another add on could be created  with all the same attributes except "without" the card slot for endless  stacking and for those that wish to continually add pads. Call it the 0.2 Dock. Just a thought. ;)
