Title: DSoundTool velocities.map <> MIDI
Post by: fuzzfilth on April 30, 2018, 01:35:27 PM
Hey there.

Not sure if Louis is still around, but is there a map which tells which MIDI velocity 1-127 correlates to DSoundTool's velocities.map with -151 - 360 ?

Thanks

Speaking to myself in an echo chamber - here it is:

I did this the long way, building a 99-Layer DSND with me speaking *many* numbers between -15 and 360, with a correlating velocities.map and then checking which MIDI velocity (1-127) triggers which Drumit velocity (-151 - 360). Large gaps where I had no unique data points, but the pattern is pretty clear.

And yet one more from the "Voices Inside My Head"-Series:

Here is DrumIt's response to any of MIDI's 127 velocities in all its glory:

A couple of insights:

1. The logarithmic shape tells two things a) Medium and quiet hits from Drumit give slightly lower MIDI velocities (f.i. to VSTs) than expected and b) MIDI notes with medium velocities tend to hit slightly harder in DrumIt than in a VST.

2. While it's obvious that MIDI notes can access but a quarter of Drumit's possible velocity steps, the balance is shifted towards harder hits where MIDI can capture roughly 2/3 of DrumIt's dynamics correctly, compared to the very quiet end where groups of 10 are all recorded as one MIDI velocity.

This might be important to anyone who tries to record and playback via MIDI or who wants to (gasp) migrate Drumit samples to a sample player with more controls. And a bigger display...
