Title: Zildjian L80 Low Volume 348 Box Set
Post by: edtc on December 20, 2015, 01:18:30 PM
hi folks

i ve bought a Zildjian L80 Low Volume 348 Box Set ... 13" hihat , 14 crash and 18" ride ...

I use a real hihat for a long time with my Ekit but it was way too loud .

Those cymbals  solves the problem of the hihat beeing too loud to play without headphones .

Now i can play with speakers , at a moderate volume , and dont have to worry about neighbours ....

It also solves the latency issue that bothered me , especialy on the ride and Hihat of course as they are analog , but also on the snare and other pads , as i can hear the tap of the sticks on the mesh head ...

I saw a vidéo of a guy , adding some gaffa tape on the meshheads on a silent kit to add some sound ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPrwL8kRMlw

so i took the idea and it works great ... i get a little attack sound , and it really helps to mask the latency on high tempos ...

I tried to  add some tape ( 2"x2" ) to the bell of the ride , and it also helps to get a little fuller sound ...

IMO , those cymbals arent exactly the same than the GEN16 . I just tested once a 14" hihat and a 18" ride ( bronze serie ) and they were much higher pitched , and lot crisper ...

Of course it s not a full cymbal sound , but for what i do , it s perfect ... and not so expensive

I m quite sure it will also be the perfect solution for AtoE conversion with JMAN's triggers ... Even better than real cymbals , as they are thin  and wont need a lot of plastic to dampen them ...
As they are thin and "full" of holes , they are light to carry ,  and not very expensive , quite the same price than an entry level shitty sounding B8 PST ZBT set ...

And no need to drill to attach the trigger  ...

Yeah I wish they had been available 6 months ago before I bought a set of Meinls.

It looks like an interesting solution. I can now buy a set of three L80s in the UK (www.gear4music.com/Drums-and-Percussion/Zildjian-L80-Low-Volume-348-Cymbal-Box-Set/1CJX (http://www.gear4music.com/Drums-and-Percussion/Zildjian-L80-Low-Volume-348-Cymbal-Box-Set/1CJX)) - and need to check with Jman on the cost to get them hooked up to Stealth triggers and my 2box. It might be a far cheaper and easier option than splashing out on a full set of Gen16s (although I am tempted with the new BB series).

Wow, very cool mate, with the jman trigger it sounds a bit hot, you barely hit it an it's very loud, but I assume that can be fixed by fiddling with the module settings, and 2-zone only, oh well, I don't use the bell on my crashes so no biggie there.

Hey Alan, in that vid I noticed something that looks like hot-glue under the trigger paddle. Also the trigger is very close to the edge, if not actually overlapping. Can you explain? (or is it explained in the next issue of DD?  :D)

a million questions will now be asked, let's be patient until february ;D
But seriously, did you also test them with a 2box module? :P

Thanks Alan. This looks very interesting. Roll on Feb :)

A three zone trigger solution for the ride would be good; I'm fairly certain Jman has that covered already. And, of course, a solution for the hihat on 2box, which Jman offers too (I just need to check how that would work with my Gibraltar hihat stand - esp., as I use the same stand for acoustic work).

I gig with my set up, so just need to ensure everything is gig-ready :-)

This looks like a neat solution.

Although the new Gen16s look great and the sounds have improved dramatically - the L80 with Stealth triggers is cheaper and means I can continue to gig with one module.

Thanks!
Andy

Still happy with my gen16 set but intrigued by the trigger solutions. In the end gen16 is not what we were hoping for and I'm not gonna replace the gen16 module when it breaks down.

JMANs conversion system is allready 3 zones with our 2BOX module ...  It s 2 zones with a roland module and other brands ...

For 3 zones 2BOX only uses a piezo switch cymbal , with the sensor under the bell ...when you hit the bell , the signal is louder than when hitting tje bow ... That s how they have their 3 zones ....
Other modules needs 2 discrete inputs for that ...

Jerry , I saved you 2 minutes ... so why dont you tell us a bit more about Drumit3 availability ...?

:)

The switch comes with a little isolater disk. The switch needs to be on the edge because it's the choke, and I like to pinch the edge of the cymbal.
Yes, it was a bit hot and could probably be dialled down a bit, but I just wanted to show that it can be done quite effectively.
And yes, it works on pretty much any module.

I received my jman triggers last week and I'm happy to say that the 3 zones ride and crash work very good with the 2box module. The acoustic noise is like hitting a closed hihat, pinky but nicer than rubber. I still have to do the hihat stand mode and make a hole in the bottom hihat to pass the cable, which hasn't been easier so far....
