Title: what going on with my snare machhead
Post by: urigal on December 31, 2012, 10:55:53 AM
Three weeks ago I got my new 2box set â€" great set

After just one week my snare mach was damaged and got an hole in it, the net just ripped :o

I came to the drum store and they was give me a new mach

Now two week after â€" the new mach was damaged again!!!

Now I am very Frustrated and don’t know what to do next

What am I doing wrong???

I have to say that I am playing maybe 30 minutes a day â€" max one hour…

I am not hitting hard with the stick, not at all â€" when I had acoustic set the head was live for years

The drum stick that I am using  is regular stick â€" light 5A with a ball wood head

The rest of the tom mach is 100% o.k

I just don’t know what to do now, if I will order more mach it probably will damage again

Some of the members hear in the forum know something about this issue ??

Thanks

Uri

Sad. How tight is the tension of your heads? I play with 2B's since May this year and all is well over here. You might try to put a Roland meshhead on your snare.

Are the tips of your sticks in good order?

i bet it is the sticks. always use nylon tips for mesh heads. i never had a problem with 2box mesh head. i had it for 2 years and i was playin alot (3 hours a day approximatelly) and then ireplaced it with a 2ply. both mesh heads are still intact...
either the stick or perhaps you tight it too much, but i bet my money on the stock mate. also for electronic drums id say that 7a sticks are much better
you just cant beat vater manhattan 7a with nylon tips.
just my 2 pennies

Thank all

The drum stick order is new, got it with the set.

I have a Nilon Vic firth stick but its 5b and I never try it yet ( it's havyer )

Buy the way, how much the tight tension should be?

i suggest to verify if the edges of your pads are slick...  if not , a little sanding would fix it...

try to buy double or triple ply mesh heads ...  ddt are really solid , but there are a lot of good other brands .

for the tension , it has to be quite tight .... i s better for accurate triggering ...

where is the hole located ?

if the hole is in the middle it has nothing to do with tension etc. also the fact that the sticks are new is irrelevant. if the tip is not smooth enough it can tear the mesh. use nylon tip to be sure. it is better to spend once 10 dollars for new sticks than spend every now and then money on new mesh heads. i have my double ply mesh head as tight as it cn be. it is like my acoustic snare. very very awesome results

Lousy pictures but almost no wear and tear. Play with Balbex 2B Hickories with a wooden tip (new set when I started on 2Box on May 1st 2012). Some stick-marks but no real wear and tear.

Might want to try a Hart Dynamic head. They are double ply and extra durable.

Hart heads are single ply, but they claim the Maxxum has a dual-ply feel. Check out digitalDrummer: we have reviewed more than a dozen  different heads.
Note also that some makes are distributed in Europe and will cost less. These include drum-tec, tdrum 682drum, ddt and a few others.

Did you check the bearings? Yes

Okay ... this is serious because you should consider having your stick technique checked. A stupid question but have you ever played on an acoustic kit? Are you familiar with the concept of having the stick do the work? In other words: do you plunge your stick with full force into the heads or do you let the stick go and bounce back like you are supposed to?
Title: Re: what going on with my snare machhead
Post by: urigal on January 02, 2013, 06:46:51 PM
Yes â€" I playing from the day I was 12 years old â€" now I'm 36

I had acoustic set for years… changed heads after years of use,  and just because it was lose color… never damaged

For the force â€" I am hitting max 50% (max) compare what I did when I played on the acoustic set

I am very jental with it

I was changed three sets of stick drums…so this is not the problem

It's true that I did not for the last 7 years so now I started with light rock and Relaxed music â€" compare to what I was play in the past….

Just don’t get it…. The pads itself look regular and no clue for something wrong with it

Now I change TOM 3 to become a snare â€" I want to check in the next few days what will be happened

if feel so lost

hey mate give us a picture of the mesh head. perhaps if we see the hole, we can understand what is wrong

Yes, please post a picture because I do not understand what can go wrong here.

And my apologies for assuming you never played drums before. It is just hard to understand why your mesh-heads  break down.

Take off the head and check if there are sharp edges on the rim or any parts are sticking out.
Try swapping the snare with another drum for a while and see if you break another one.

You have to upload the photo to some place at the internet (I use Flickr). Then you can link it from there.

Hi all

o.k,  I put a link to some photos that I shot

( its a link to my facebook - i will hope you will see it)

http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.389547271139104.91667.100002515033260&type=3#!/media/set/?set=a.389547271139104.91667.100002515033260&type=1 (http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.389547271139104.91667.100002515033260&type=3#!/media/set/?set=a.389547271139104.91667.100002515033260&type=1)

in the first photoâ€" you can see the hole location  in the mash

in the second photo â€" I shot it with flash â€" so you can see the stick drum marks

the third photo â€" the new drums682 mash, you can see again that marks on the net

the last photo â€" you can see that bellow the pad I saw some black dust, it's not a dust of course it's coming from the mash

for the hitting Strength â€" I thought maybe it's my fault, cause no one in this forum did not have this problem â€" but now I sure that its 100% that its not my fault

how can I know it? â€" simple â€" the trigger of the snare can translate the Strength of the hitting, If you hit it hard you can hear that the sound is changing from low to the maximum hit

you can change the level of the gain in the unit, so if you change the gain from "0" in the default to let's say "3" â€" you can hit it less harder and get this sound of the max hard hit sooner

what I am saying â€"the level of my snare gain is 3, and when I playing I usually not getting the sound of the "hard hit" (the max point of the hitting)â€" this is a proof that I am not hitting hard

questions:

1.   Do you also have this stick marks ?  (you have to be in specific angle with light to see it)
2.   Do you have also that black dust - ? its mean that the mash is tearing slowly ?
3.   Any other ideas? â€" if this mach will damag I will leave the drums and buy Flute â€" LOL!!!
Title: Re: what going on with my snare machhead

the fact that you dont get maximum hit values doesnt mean you dont hit hard. imo by the look of the mesh shape, there is either something wrong with your technique or your are hitting waaaaaaay too hard. turn the gain up to the point your hard hits register as hard hits (mind you your hards hits from now on should be less hard than what you are doing). i am hitting pretty hard and never had problems at all. thats why i am talking about technique. i dont want to disrespect you as a drummer , just to try and help ok?
take care

ps. perhaps you should try and use 7a sticks with nylon tip

I don’t look for respects or something.... and I really Appreciate your help - thanks

When I play I make the stick bounce back and I never make it like "digging" into the mash â€" I don’t know what to say….

I checked the snare pad again and look for differences compare to the other pads â€" and there is some different

I don’t know if it can be the answer but:

When you look on the pad you have this gray sponge that makes the mach Strained and tight

in all the rest of the pads this sponge is very close to the mach â€" and if you put your finger there you will fill like a small peak in the mach â€" and this is what make the mash tight

In the snare â€" I don’t have it! Its look like that sponge is not make Enough  tight to the mach â€" and when you put your finger there you will not fill any peak / bump,

Any idea?

It must be a combination of things.

First of all, foam in my snare is identical positioned as the foam in the toms.
So, you definitely have to look into the foam issue.

Second: my snare mesh also has wear and tear (which is natural because it is the destiny of all drums-heads). I also have some black dust under my snare but not much and the surface of my used snare and tom-heads is a bit more shiny. Still, the response is good and the snare plays well.
So, take the advice and crank up your settings and play with less power.

I also will post pictures of my snare (mesh-head is now 8 months in use) and a brand-new tom picture. I hope you see the difference.

Now it's two days that I am using one of the 8" pad as a snare and the mach looks o.k compare to the 12". I even change my music that I played and now turn it to some more ection with nine inch nails and Metallica

I connect the store of 2box and ordered one more 12" pad( I any way want to use it like floor  in the future) . For now I will use it like a snare . When I will get it I will write the conclusions

For the technics of my playing, I just play now one hour to see if I playing wrong - but It seems to be correct, I use my hand like an axis with a light hittin, actually the only force that hitting the mash is the wight of the stick itself , noting more.

I will defently Check the foam isiuu

I maybe even will shot some video a uplode to YouTube so you can give me your opinion about it.

Today I bought a very light drum stick - it's a zilijian 6a and its great .

When I was in the drum store I check the stick on a yamaha 540, noting to compare to the 2box set, like a million mails away  :patbat2box:

I want so much to fix this problem and enjoining playing with this great set of the 2box

Nothing new here. I teared up the original snare head after one month of playing. Just buy some 682 heads, double layer and can handle sledgehammer style!

And last week I smashed through the 2box basssdrum head. The new double layered meshhead is also less bouncy.

Well, I´m hitting really (!) hard sometimes, and no damage done in 3 months (almost daily playing). the only thing was that the snarehead ripped a little on the edge, I guess I cranked it too hard or the metal underneath is not smooth enough. In case I will fix that when changing the head (it is still in use &works fine howsoever...)
I´m using Sonor Jazz-Stix with wooden tips.

Unbelievable!!!

After I saw that foam issue thing, I Decide to buy another snare!  - just to prove that! ( and use it in the future like floor)

Its wasn’t cheep but I was sure now that it's something wrong about my first snare

Now its 4 days after I installed the new snare â€" and after hours on hours that I played â€" the mash look like new! No sign of wear

Just to remind that I was change four machs every two days….

I think this is the last conclusion

The new snare its great !! :patbat2box: :patbat2box:

I will contact 2box about it

Thanks for all the friends that help, upload photos and all â€" thanks!!
