Title: FAKE Lexar 32GB SDHC Class 10 133X cards on eBay! Beware!
Post by: Jman on May 30, 2012, 04:07:20 AM
So, I went ahead and bought a few auctions of these..... Take a look at my link, there are 2 different sellers. Do not buy any of these if they are in the type of packaging you see in these sales, they are FAKE, not Genuine. The performance speeds are about 10 times slower than the Genuine. The Labels are not the shiny Gold original ... a fake yellowish embossed label..... Just thought I'd mention it before you waste your time. They are FAKE CRAP!

So, stick to the Genuine Lexar in original packaging is my suggestion!

Thanks Jman for this useful post!

The packaging is very strange yes, as there is no mention of Lexar brand anywhere and the font of 'Memory Card' is very 'cheap'.

FYI, the genuine package looks like this: (http://www.fetchxpress.com.au/assets/full/CELL10231236.jpg)

He makes a big emphasis on them being the real thing and the auction says new and in original packaging. Also says returns accepted, and even if it didn't say that you are covered if someone is misrepresenting their auction.

Post a picture or 2 of the cards and packaging after you receive those. I will post a pic of the genuine next to the fakes here also.

I had my suspicions on those cards I just showed as fakes before I bid on them, but bought them at $20 -$23 apiece on auction .... so took a chance hoping somehow they were real and the sellers had bought somehow in a large lot without retail packaging and repackaged them. But those were definitely FAKES!

I have already arranged returns on my FAKES.

So just chalk this one up as another "taking one for the team" for me. I did the same thing last year, buying a fake (too good to be true auction) Sandisk card for the 2Box  ;D

I bought it from the same guy as you BA  ... it came without package send from Riga, Latvia.

It has an engraving in back and was made in Korea. I loaded it with a backup from the original SD but haven't tried it in my Brain yet. It looks more real then the fake one in Jmans post but we only know when we try it with the 2-Box.

Ran a little test on my Mac on the card with AJA Systemtest ...

Jman or BA, can you run such a test on a Windows machine with the same software or this application:

Hate to say it, but it doesn't look good, to me anyway. Every one of the 8 Genuine/Original cards I have are engraved on the back exactly like the one in the pictures I posted above. Each card identical except for serial #s. Each card has it's own different serial #. It may not be super obvious from my pics but the front label gold is that kind of gold that looks like gold plate if you know what I mean.... not like just a gold color .... can't tell what yours is like.... My card looks more like a good copy of the original package, far from goldplated.

I'm checking Wiki now and the 133xspeed equals with a 20.0 MB/s read speed. That is the Read speed the card clocks. Write is much slower, 6 MB/s in a second run. But AJA is designed to test foto/video transfer. I will send a mail to the seller and consider sending the card back.

BA, just send the guy the next e-mail:

Dear originalmemory,

The 2-Box digital drums user group shares info on specific cards as the Lexar you sold to me. The 2-Box drum-computer has very specific requirements and does not function with any card. I have issues with this card and I'm told the card you send me is not an original. The engraving is different from 8 confirmed genuine Lexars, the front is different (less goldplated) and the performance is not as expected from a Lexar in combination with the 2-Box. At least one other 2-Box user will be very disappointed because he bought one from you too.

What can we do to solve this issue?

Kind regards,

I keep you informed and have 14 days left to return mine.

Without doing extensive testing inside or outside the module I think the 1st thing to look at is the time it takes to load up everything from start up of the module. With the Xtension cable installed in my module .... my cards have close to 30GB on em .... I have 2 drum modules ..... I can push the button side by side on my modules and the cards will load everything in 7 to 8 seconds identical time either drum module. I could do that over and over with any of those 8 cards and it will be identical .... I think that is one of the key things about these particular genuine Lexar cards, they have fast Read Access time.

We have tested cards with higher and lower Read or Write speeds that don't cut it, our modules are very particular especially about that Access time, a spec you will rarely find listed for any SDHC cards because that is not a very important spec for most modern digital cameras or camcorders.

So if you load up your card with your 2Box files. Plug it in .... if it takes longer than those 7 or 8 seconds to load that could be a bad sign.... J

I just ordered a Lexar from a genuine shop in Holland. If all goes well it will be delivered tomorrow and I will be able to run the same test on a genuine card. I keep you posted. I will also post a fake - genuine photo like you did. Now, this shop is in Urk and Dutchies know Urk is a weird town ... so, maybe they send me another fake  :o

http://www.cameranu.nl/nl/geheugen-opslag/secure-digital-sd-/lexar/lexar-sdhc-pro-133x-32gb/h86_3563_90224/

(I have not yet decided if I keep this (former) demokit or swap it for a new one when new kits arrive, so far I consider keeping this kit, it works well and I love it but that is the reason why I have not yet deployed the SD-extender).

My card looks more like a good copy of the original package, far from goldplated.

One thing on the labelling that could be a give away .... If you look at the shiny gold on the label:
Even on the box picture and on most pics you see on the web you will see the shiny Gold Swoosh band above SDHC 10 .... with the other part of the Gold in a lighter non shiny color. But every genuine card I have the Swoosh is not the Shiny Gold ... the Shiny Gold is below the Swoosh. Even on the Lexar website you'll see it the other way, but when you get one and open it up you'll see what I mean .... It is no wonder that when people try to copy the label they copy it with the Swoosh in the Shiny Gold, cause unless you actually get an original you wouldn't know...

Not sure if they ever changed that labelling at Lexar, but mine are definitely originals in Sealed retail packs, serial nos, etc. Bought from reputable big name retailers like B&H Photo, and Adorama Camera.

 BA, relax, everything is oke.

Under Ebay rules he will have to make a refund and he must do this for me and you. I will send my card back and he confirmed the refund. Just make sure you mail him via the Ebay account, do not mail or contact him outside Ebay, that is the trick.

The other thing is hat I expect a genuine card today (same price) from a Dutch shop. I will run the same test on it to match the results and send my fake back on Friday.

The Dutch shop also sends international so you might order there. But let me post my pictures and resuls first. The 'fake' Lexar might work, however, I prefer the original one and not some kind of imitation. I'm at work now, will test and post results tonight.

Here we go. Genuine SD has been delivered today. 66,45 EURO. In the Lexar package. I made a picture of the fake and the genuine and you see my finger reflecting in the golden print on the genuine SD. That is the difference. Backside genuine is as Jman described. Uploading content 2-Box into the chip and then I will run the speedtests.

Copied the 2-Box library to the genuine Lexar and ran the same test. Everything simular.

First the fake card:

Then the Lexar:

As you can see the genuine Lexar writes much faster in the same test.

The proof if the fake works is BA using it on his 2-Box. Mine has not yet been modified and I can only test the SD without 2-Box. I cannot tell you the loadtime because of this.

Mail from the seller:
We will definitely solve any issues we have.
We just buy the cards from wholesalers in Korea/China.
And we didn't know about 2-Box systems. As you see the specific card has been bought from us a lot of times. For example card from your listing has been bought 50 times.
And no one tells anything about any issues with Cameras or Camcorders.
Anyway, as we state on our listings, if card doesn't work on your device, we will return the money.
You just need to approve, that you are able to send the card back to us (we will cover the cheapest return cost).
As soon as we receive confirm from you, we will refund you money.

They refunded the money this morning, checked Paypal and it is there.

Yeah, I'll have no problem getting my money back either. But neither of the sellers I contacted gave any indication they would stop selling the fake cards. I even uploaded pics of the differences. Maybe a little selfish not to act sooner, but as soon as I return these and get my refund I will report both sellers as selling Fake items if they do not stop their listings.

Here's one more that ships to Greece. This one out of New York city. Says original Lexar packaging. I would definitely contact the seller though and verify that they have the genuine sealed pkg... Looks like a reputable dealer, huge amount of sales and a brick and mortar building:

I explained to this ebay faker that the 2-Box community requires the original because of it's special specifications. I had no issue, he is too afraid for a bad rep, that will kill his business on ebay.

paypal doesnt show any refund but i guess it needs some time to show it. thank you for a quick refund. but please listen to me. i do not want to pay for sending fees, because it was not my mistake. this card is not an original. i wont say it or report it to anyone, i dont care about that, i just do not want to pay money for something i dint get. so please if you want me to return this card, you have to pay my postal expences. i do not know what it is yet as i will have to ask the postal office. i will try to ask tomorrow. i will send it registered so that i am sure it wont get lost. but i do not want to lose money on a transaction that was not good for me. when this all gets resolved i will still leave a positive feedback. all i care is not spending any money on this card that never worked....

I decided to send it via my postoffice for a regular stamp (~ 1 euro) and not for ~ 10 euro's. Guess it went well, and my genuine Lexar works like a charm.

I returned my FAKE cards to the seller. Contacted him and he agrees to pay return shipping too. But after returning the items that were delivered back to him on June 4 he will not respond to my messages and has not given refunds (I bought 3). I've had to open eBay cases on all 3 to try and get my refund.... I hate these people that sell FAKEs. I reported this and another seller that is selling the same fakes and eBay has not removed the listings. Really makes you think eBay is more concerned with getting lots of money from seller fees than policing their fraudulent items being sold!
The other thing that is sad is that I am the only one who discovered that the cards of these sellers are FAKE. Lots of others have bought the cards and believe the cards are great..... ignorance is Bliss I suppose ;)

in my case jman (btw whats yer real name? i dont like calling you jman), the card had all sorts of errors. once i put it in the module it gave about 4-5 fat errors etc.

in the past i also dealt with bad sellers. paypal is your friend here. open a disputeand you are quaranteed to get your money back. i dont think you will get the postal expences as well, but if you provide paypal with his messages, perhaps you will be lucky in that as well. thank you very much for openning our eyes so that we know which lexar is a genuine on or not. i cant wait for mine to come

I send a mail to Lexar. No reply. Makes you think no one cares about this. Not as sexy as Gucci and RayBan I assume.

I think it is a wide spread problem which the companies like Lexar might not be able to do much about. There are sooooo many of those kind of electronic knock off companies in Hong Kong alone .... Not just memory cards, almost anything that is popular and can be imitated is prey to China, Korea, etc.... I guess I shouldn't get on a soapbox though, I've bought a few things from Alibaba in small wholesale quantities that are prolly 1/5 the price of similar items I could buy at home. Although there is a difference between companies that use reverse engineering and people like those deceiving buyers by selling FAKE branded products.

The front label looks right, and up till now all the fakes had the label wrong with the Shiny part and flat color reversed. Mine are from Korea, but I believe they are also made in China, so you are prolly fine .... especially since I found this little review and the printing on the back is just like yours .... probably yours is original.

I had a similar issue with Sony Memory Stick cards. The look exactly like the real thing, but the Sony camera I put it in spilled the beans with an error message. When I contacted the seller, they said they'd replace them if I returned them ... to China. If a deal looks to good to be true ... guess what?
