I get the occasional odd issue with my hi-hat where I hit it open, then close it and the open sound still plays (decays) at the same time the closed sound plays. It happens rarely and wondered is it my poor technique or a setup issue?

This could be set-up related although the bit about the two sounds playing together is not one I've not experienced.
I had similar problem where the open sound would continue after I had closed the hi-hat and it was due to applying too much pressure when setting-the closed position during calibration. You really need to loosen the clutch and let the pad rest under it's own weight and then tighten the clutch to set the open position. Try that if you haven't already.
