G'day 2Boxers,
Have I lost the plot ?
Does the HiHat have a choke function ? I could have sworn it did when I first set mine up.
The switch mechanism is on the HiHat so shouldn't it be choke able ?
I think I need medication and a lay down.
Tony
how do you choke the hi hat in real life?
since choking a hi hat isnt plausible in real life (aka acoustic kit), and since 2box is the greatest acoustic drum simulator in electronic drums, there would never be a choke function. you get 3 zones though. one zone is the foot (yes it counts as a zone) another zone is the edge of the cymbal , and the third one is the bow
hope i cleared it enough for you. have a good night
(i will, i got a new drum chair so cant wait for tomorrow to practise )

Thanks for your message.
Since I've only played acoustic drums as long as it takes the drummer to go and buy more beer I wouldn't have a clue how acoustic sets work. ;)
I assumed that the edge switch on the HiHat, on the 2Box, was for choke'ing just like on the cymbals.
Interesting.
I wonder if I was dreaming that I could choke the HiHat before.
Probably.
Just like that shinny Red bike you dream about as a kid only to wake to an empty space where you thought it was.
Rosebud........ :o
Tony.
A "choke" with the Hi hat is achieve by closing the Hi Hat by pulling the pedal after you've hit it while open. You will obtain this "Shuuuuuuuuup" sound.
There no need to do it with your hands. Unless you want to have your finger chewed by the Hi hat (assuming you play on a real one).
exactly what i meant, but more vividly explained
ps. beer and drumming is a dangerous thing
i onluy drink beers (and tequillas and gin and and and.. afterwords

... par ici la bonne "Shuuuuuuuuup" !! :)
Oui et si tu fais fais un coup de caisse claire entre deux shup, ça fait "Shup Ta Shup" mais ce topic part en sucette après.

You can in fact choke a hi-hat with your hands in "real life" - because drummers do (or did).
Although it depends to a degree on how the hats are set up.
The top needs ideally to be fairly loose.
I don't suppose it has a lot of uses today but basically it's an old jazz technique.
Two hits (on loose hats) in a fast and swinging shuffle rhythm, followed by a (hand) choke
on the beat. Keep repeating.............
:)
i learn as i live. still why have a pedal on them though? lol. i try itn in 2 hours in the studio and tell ya all what i think
I believe the choking function works only if you are using 3channel mode and the HH uses two. Not sure if the hI-Hat pad even has that functionality. My guess is no. I just tried to plug the Hi Hat pad into the Cym 3 Plug and all I go was a choked sound by play9ing the HH pad.

.... the hihat pad has the same edge switch+piezo sensor than the 14" cymbals ... in theory it could be chokable ....
But IMO , choking a E-hihat isnt useful , as it wont be as "expressive" than a regular hat , where the choke not only affect decay , but also and mainly the tone of the sound . Depending where and how you gtab the cymbal , the sound changes a lot , and a simple "on/off" info wont be able to mimic that....
It s way better to use real cymbals for this purpose ...
Phil Rudd's been doing this for years as well, but in a much more utilitarian way:

Fun factoid:
"On 1 December 2010, Rudd was convicted of possessing 25g of marijuana on his boat in Tauranga, New Zealand, but later had his cannabis conviction quashed on the grounds that it would have stopped him from continuing to tour with the rock band."
