Here's a question -

Does anybody know how the midi notes 1 to 127 actually "map" to strike velocities.
I mean is it a linear sequence or not?

Sorry, not very well expressed - but if you know the answer you probably can see what
I'm trying to say  :)

thanks

whilst the MIDI notes (0–127) in themselves are a linear sequence, most samplers and synths have velocity curve controls that enable you to change the relationship between the linear MIDI sequence and the velocity actually played.

and looking at it from the other end, most MIDI generating instruments (e.g. keyboards and e-kits) have velocity curves that change the relationship between the velocity of a keypress or strike and the MIDI note generated.

Doh!  of course.
