Kick-drum problem

Hi,
At yesterdays rehearsal my 2box kick-drum stopped working and now I can't get it to work.
On the rehearsal before yesterday the kick-drum suddenly started to produce double-triggering and felt wrong in how it reacted.

Yesterday I took off the drum-head to check if something was loose or so. When I tapped with my fingertip on the sensor I got some sound but it was 100% accurate. I couldn't see anything broken so I put on the head again but still no sound.

Have you ever had this kind of problem? Any ideas what to do?
Thx!

rythm

Hi, did you check that the sensor´s cables are attached to it?

Frankly

Hi and thanks for your reply,
Yes i checked them and they looked ok from what I could see.

most likely one of the small wires to the piezo is damaged and is making a poor intermittent connection.

to rule out other possibilities, check that the input to the module is okay by plugging a different trigger into it. and try a different TRS cable between the kick and the module input if you haven't already.

Frankly

Thanks fishmonkey - I'll give it a try!

Sorry, my mistake. I meant wires, not cables. That thing happened to me.

yeah, the wires can break loose from the piezo very easily. It is also possible that you will see no damage at all. I had one that way. I knew there was a problem with the piezo though, because I have seen those symptoms in the past. The piezo is a 27MM piezo. I just soldered a new piezo in...reattached the foam and it is perfect, probably better than it was new actually. From all the problems I read about on on this forum with kicks, I would say ... it is only a couple. bucks at most for piezos ... very simple to replace with a little bit of soldering skill. It really only takes a matter of minutes to change a piezo. And something that edrummers should concider. Trust me, if you play edrums for many years you will run into a piezo eventually that needs to be replaced, instead of waiting days or weeks for a repair, I would not even hesitate to repair my own ... obviously not my first rodeo though. ;D
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

thanks Jman good advice - no problems for me yet, but as you say its only a matter of time

Frankly

Thanks Jman! I'll give it a try though I haven't been soldering for a decade or two...
Could this one work? Piezo 27 mm.

I think you have Mouser where you are?? This is what I use AB2746B :

I don't want to lead anyone who isn't confident in a direction that might void their warranty. But, as I say with a little skill/practice replacing a Piezo is a quick fix. As far as soldering though a piezo is one of the trickier things to solder. You can burn the ceramic if not careful.

a thread over at vdrums.com with good info on piezo soldering:

My link didn't work but here's a better one from a store where I buy electric stuff:

To the 27 mm piezo. Looks quite similar to the specs from your link, doesn't it?

I'll check into Mouser, I bet I can order from there as well. Never heard of it before though.

Thanks again!

rythm

Frankly: thx for the link. I´ve been wondering where in Sweden you get a piezo that you could use for edrums  :)

rythm

Jman: is there a certain reason why you use Mouser - superb quality for example?

I'm not sure that this one will work. But i'll print out the product spec (PDF on Jmans linked page) and ask someone who might know (maybe the ELFA-store) if these are equal. Otherwise I'll order from mouser.

Quality, lots of stock on hand, pretty much worldwide. Not many companies like that.
