Title: FXpansion Zildjian Digital Vault pack...
Post by: fishmonkey on January 16, 2013, 01:13:12 AM
hey, any opinions on this pack (it's half price until 31 Jan)? they seem to be a repackaging of 3 earlier packs:

http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=198&tab=481

i'm a bit confused by the Gen16 terminology. i thought that referred to the electro-acoustic cymbals?

Yes, this is the three original Gen16 sample packs in one. Some great cymbals sounds, with various articulations - brushes, mallets, etc.

so are these the samples that are used by the actual Gen16 cymbals?

do you think they are good value for money (at half price)?

If you are Talking about the Gen 16 metal cymbals with the holes and blue LED mic then no. They do not use samples but are cymbals fitted with pickups that go into a small sound processor to alter the audio characteristics. No samples involved!

The Sample pack on the other hand are samples of some great real acoustic cymbals and a real bargain at £50, I just bought it!

that's what i thought about the actual Gen16 cymbals. so why did they choose to call these sampled cymbals Gen16 as well???

anyway, the demos do sound good. have any of you compared the cymbals, sample layers and articulations with those that come with the Jazz & Funk pack?

Gen 16 is the name of Zildjian's electronic percussion range which includes VST packs, acoustic/electronic cymbals and iPad grooves. See http://gen-16.com/

I don't have the Jazz & Funk pack, but the hats have less articulations (between 20 and 40 hits) than the standard hats that come with BFD. however I just finished making 5 sets of hats this morning and you can't really tell there are less articulations in there and they sound really good! The other cymbals however (crash, ride etc) seem to have around the same number of hits for articulations as the standard ones but I only checked a few.

A real bargain at £50!

yep, it's about time they lowered the prices on their expansion packs (i paid USD249 for the Jazz & Funk pack a couple of years ago).

i've been wanting the percussion pack for a while but now i've listened to the samples again and i'm not that impressed. and i can sample my own rubbish bins!

It's the 16th generation of Zildjians making cymbals; hence Gen 16.

fair enough, great story the Zildjian family.

I'd highly recommend the Zildjian Gen16 VST samples. Much cheaper than I paid before this special. They are definitely my go to cymbal dsnds now in my 2Box modules.

A little side note teaser ..... SDSE for BFD2 is in the works ...  (sorry Lustar if I shouldn't be gossiping ;))
so it'll be a one click thing to convert these and other BFD2 packs/kits to dsnds you can use in the 2Box module.

hmmm, looks like i'll have to install Reaper in my Windows partition!

I can recommend the BFD2 pack. I added 10 kits to my 2Box including DW, Rogers, Pork Pie, Pearl Masterworks, Orange County, Ludwig Vistalite and Black Oyster.

There are different Digital Vault packs offered and different delivery methods, packaged or digital download. Here is one of the small pkgs:  http://www.amazon.com/Gen16-Digital-Vault-Z-Pack-Cymbals/dp/B00439GVLQ
Another larger pack: http://audiodeluxe.com/products/fxpansion-bfd-zildjian-digital-vault-pack
I suggest looking at SDSE for building the sounds from the Digital Vault cymbal pack for the 2Box module:

BFD is one of the best software drum samplers for acoustic drum sounds:

http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=30&tab=99

BFD Eco is the cut-down version, and BFD3 is the current full-blown version.

The expansions, such as the Zildjian cymbal packs, are add-on packs of drum samples that load into the software.

when you buy BFD Eco or BFD3  you get standalone and plugin versions. when using SDSE to build DSNDs for the 2Box module, you load the plugin version inside Reaper as the DAW host.

in a nutshell, SDSE controls Reaper, triggering the drum sounds using the BFD plugin, recording the subsequent audio output from the plugin, and processing it with DSoundTool to create files that the 2Box module understands.

alternatives to BFD include Superior Drummer, Addictive Drums, etc.

Also, if you want to get started on the Digital Vault cheaply, that first (Amazon) link includes BFD Eco along with the Digital Vault. As fishmonkey said, Eco is the trimmed down BFD version, but before you dump a bunch of dough into it, that might be a good place to dip your toes. Also, if you haven't looked at Sennheiser DrumMic'a ..... that is a free download of a drum kit that is pretty decent quality to get you started building some free dsnds. http://de-de.sennheiser.com/drummica If you don't speak German, just use your browser translator to look it over.

My humble opinion is to forget about Eco.

I bought it thinking it was a relatively cheap introduction to BFD, and I guess it is.. but when you realize the potential of making your own dnsds you'll be wanting to upgrade soon (as I do now).

As far as I understand Eco doesn't read all layers in a sample, and you can't make dsnds with the same layer-depth as with BFD3, and  some of the sounds that come with Eco are actually not all that good.

I agree, if you are serious about building your own dsnds BFD3 is a great way to go IMO. And BFD3 comes with a whole lot of excellent drum samples, the number of velocity layers is great, the cymbals were done with 3 zones, etc. etc. There are already a lot of great cymbals in BFD3, so if the OP wants to spend the money he would probably find all the cymbals he needs already in BFD3.

The only reason I recommended the $49 Digital Vault deal is that BFD Eco is included free .... so it is a way to at least get a cheap start. And the good thing is that the Digital Vault will plug right into BFD3, and if he decides to upgrade to BFD3 and take advantage of the full depth of the program, he will already have the Digital Vault expansion.  J

I see your point. Am I right, though, that Eco doesn't read the samples as well as 3? I might be interested in checking out the vault package myself.

Ah.. it's a physical product.. not a download.. and no shipping outside USA..

Not much luck for us euro-guys...

By the way, is there a place that lists the instruments which come with BFD3? I searched for it but couldn't find much info.

Yes, I think Lustar mentioned to me once that BFD Eco is limited to 24 velocity hits. And BFD3 is much higher than that.

I believe that is the same pack that includes BFD Eco. But you might want to contact the seller to be sure.

Yikes.. you're fast Jman :)

I edited my post, but you had already answered it twice, so I'll repeat the question. I was just wondering if the instrument contents in BFD3 was listed somewhere.

Haven't seen one on line. But there are 5 full "sticks" kits including hats, cymbals. Plus a full brush kit and a mallet kit. A huge amount of excellent instruments. http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=205&tab=495

It's the same seller on Ebay as the Amazon link you posted up the thread (be-on-ke). The difference is probably the shipping policy of Amazon regarding digital products.

Anyway, more on topic, I'm thinking about the Gen16 pack, but there seems to be different versions of the same VST on sale, and I'm not sure if these $39-49 packs are the same as the one FXpansion is selling for 95UKP.

Also - I really don't want to spend so much money on BFD (full version) just to export the Gen16 cymbal sounds when I'm not interested in building 100's of kits. I'm looking for a specific sound, I'm not willing to pay $1000's to get a million kits when I need 3 or 5 at the most for live playing. I guess I need to start a new thread.
