Title: Acoustic Set + Mesheads + Drumit5 Brain + Triggers
Post by: murphy on April 12, 2012, 10:00:48 PM
Hi,
while I already have a 2 box set, I plan to by an additional  cheap acoustic set for our practice room. I want to modify it and use it with triggers and mesh-heads. Is this possible with the drumit 5 brain? Which triggers work best with the drumit brain when using mesh-heads?
Is it hard to get a good sound with the triggered acoustic set?

TIA Steffen

Thats a video ( well there is only audio and a non moving image) of a guy who have use triggers : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jonxR2Vzojc

He seems to get a nice sound out of it, especially if its for practice. i dont know wich triggers work best but from the image we see he's using rolands triggers on the toms.

DDT ROLAND or DDRUM are supported by the 2BOX brain.. there are 3 specific triggers mode for acoustic triggers ( Ac1 Ac2 Ac3 )

When i bought my module , i also ordered a 12" mesh head and a DDRUM snare trigger , and mounted it on a 12" tom i had...
... it quite ok but not thrilling....   especially for the rim that is barely usable ... so it works but not so well for me ...

Then i converted a 13" snare drum , with a home made foam cone-sensor 27mm piezo , and 2 10mm piezos for the rim . The result is just a lot lot better ... and for less than the price of one snare trigger , you can  convert the whole drum-kit ...

With the 2BOX brain , it s even not usefull to do a crossbar design with a centered piezo (because there is no positional sensing )  you can simply put a sensor on a metal "L" bar attached on a lug , and rim sensors on a small "L"bar , so anything is removable ...

here you can see how easy it is to make a good rim trigger :

So if you have time , it s worth it ....

here is also  post about a converted kit by ROB ...

There are many external triggers and "drop-in" internal trigger kits, and we've reviewed most of them in digitalDrummer, the free online magazine.
2box is about to release its own clip-on triggers.
Personally, I've had great results with ddrum and ddt, both of which are virtually plug and plug (with some rim sensitivity boost), but with a bit of tweaking, you can get excellent results with most.
Also, don't compromise on the mesh head. Again,we've reviewed most of the available options.
