Title: Best 32GB SDHC card I have used so far.
Post by: Jman on June 24, 2011, 12:26:10 AM
Just thought I would post this cause I have spent lots of duckits on several different 32GB SDHC cards for my 2Box module. I started with the Transcend 32GB (Blue One 20MB/S) ... then got an off brand that didn't even work... But my very Favorite is the Sandisk Extreme 32GB (30MB/S) card. I have had noticable improvement using this card.

Probably do to the larger size dsnds I have been filling my module with, I began to hear more noticable latency on the Trancend cards. That started me on a quest to get the very best response  that I can on my new sampled kits.... leeding me to the Extreme card. I have also found that some of my sampled dsnds were overkill, I reduced my splash, China, kick and HH transition dsnds from 99 hit samples to 49 or 33 depending on the instruments (a splash, or kick just doesn't need 99 hits IMO) and the resulting dsnds seem to perform equal but are much smaller.

To be fair, when I first got the Transcend 32GB cards I formatted them in Windows .... later learning that was prolly not the greatest idea. But I did go back and wipe em clean and use the right formatting tool to redo them, so did I hinder those cards' performance, not sure .... but they definitely do not perform equivalent to the faster Sandisk Extreme card. If anyone has a chance to compare the 2 I would be interested to see if your results are the same as I have found.

I also went a step further and bought the Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB card thinking that since it is the fastest (45MB a second) it might be a noticable difference .... It wasn't, as a matter of fact my Extreme cards boot faster by a few seconds than the Extreme Pro, and I can notice no improvement in performance with the Extreme Pro.  So with both the Extreme and the Extreme Pro cards I experience no noticable latency now.

Thought I would put this info out here. Since I already spent handfulls of cash on this quest, maybe the next guy can save a little from my experience .... J

Thanks for sharing your experience.
there's no doubt that sandisk makes the best sd cards out there, but they are priced accordingly....cheapest I can find is $125 whereas the trascend was $75. If you have the money, go for the sandisk, otherwise the trascend is ok I think...

NO Formatting .... just plugged em into my card reader, added all the files, folders and good to go.

Hi Slap, Yeah, I sure haven't found any advantage with the Extreme Pro over the Extreme as far as how the kit performs .... and both of my Extreme cards load up a few seconds faster at power up than the Pro.... Maybe a slight advantage with the PC, but not in the module IMO ...

i once again say i bought the extreme card, not the pro. it takes about 10 seconds to load as i have about 20 giga of stuff in there (mostly drumless tracks) but after it loads it is amazing. no lag at all. a surely great card.just make sure it is genuine. i bought it from ebay very cheaply from hong cong. i can provide the seller if you want. it was in genuine case unoppened etc. and i bought it just for 87 dollars. in greece they sold it for 120 euros. what a steal

That would be a good link ..... I have bought a couple genuine cards ... plus one off eBay that was a fake... it had the right label, but it was definitely Fake and did not work ... it was a blue card instead of black, that is a pretty big give away right there >:(

I've bought 2 of the Sandisk Extreme 32GB cards from this same seller. Cheapest price I could find and both cards are genuine, working perfect. Says he ships to most parts of the world:

At the german drummerforum Deve Loper wrote that the OS can read SD cards up to 32GB. This was end of 2010 so not the latest version of the OS. But i don't think that this has changed. So buying a 64GB card for the 2Box brain could be wasted money.

Lots of us are using 32GB cards with the latest OS. No different from the previous OS as far as that goes. The reason for using an SDHC card extender for one thing is you cannot access the card (any card over 4GB) via USB when it is inside the module. You need to use the card in a card reader to make changes like adding new files via your computer or using the Sound Editor, etc.

Received a 32 GB Card (Sandisk Extreme) as suggested by Jman. For some reason my external card reader does not find the card, and it will not find the 4 GB card that came in the 2Box module as well. Any suggestions. My OS is Windows 7. My card reader is a Vantec 8 in 1 Card Reader and USB 2.0 Hub.

Thanks.

The card reader in my Win 7 PC is pretty much worthless. Pc is less than a year old and I put the card reader in myself when I got the PC ... it worked OK for several months .... anyway the point is, card readers and Windows 7 are hit or miss in my experience, but the cheap little USB card readers like this one never fail me:

I keep a few on hand since they are so cheap.

I had the same problem with the Sandisk Extreme... I tried to reformat the card and then it worked but kept making a weird scratching noise.. I switched to a Kingston brand 32gb class 10 card...no problems so far

I checked that Ebay link but they do not ship to Canada. I would rather buy something that has been proven to work than try out a bunch of different ones myself. Could I buy one of those from you Jman?

Thanks.

There's about a Bazillion of those on eBay Canada ... they are all pretty much the same generic cheap card reader, I've just bought the cheapest ones I could find when I bought em ... blue seems to be the popular color today ;D

Are you sure you got a genuine Sandisk Extreme card? There are plenty of fakes being sold. I bought one fake that was like that.... returned it. The other 3 are genuine (visually you can tell the difference) and don't need formatting. The genuine Extreme cards should not need formatting, and you don't want to format the card for optimum performance according to Deve Loper.

I did pick up a card reader today at Staples that does work with my system.

Cheers!
