Using real heads

Hey groovers,

I decided to put real heads on my 2box and I think it has made me enjoy the kit again. I confess I was starting to lose interest because I'm a drummer who practices alot and I feel that practicing on an e-kit is a little harmful to my technique on a real kit. If you don't agree please just respect our differences because I'm making this thread for another reason.

I now like playing the kit but it is obviously too loud. I know that I have to accept the stick attack/impact but I want to know if anyone has found a way to stop the head from resonating and playing a note (it sounds like a drum if you haven't tried it for yourself). It might be something simple like glueing a felt patch on the top/bottom or using a specific head that rings less.

Also, I've tuned the snare head for maximum tension and I want to know if this is somehow harmful as I understand some parts of the 2box are sensitive/fragile. I also notice a bit of a pop/feedback from the bass drum and I wonder if this is the trigger system sensing the recoil on the head or the whole "drum" as it shakes around alot more now.

I've left the mesh heads on the toms for now and there is such a huge difference in feel I know I can't go back. I might give double ply mesh a go if I can't solve this.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Spazo

I am an absolute beginner (started drumming just 18 month ago). My drum teacher uses real drums and my play on practicing on the mesh heads is obviously different than the lessons once a week on the "real" drum. I have come closer to the real drum by using double ply mesh heads from DDT but it will allways be a difference to real heads.

However, my playing has become better, that is what I feel and what my teacher sais... Give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

all the best

Sorry Spazo, no suggestions....

But I gotta agree on the question of technique, soon as I can afford it I'm going
to get a full set of 2ply mesh heads in the new year.

The 2box pads are real nice to play, but really they're just too easy........ all that
bounce.  If I ever get near a real kit again I just know I'm in for a BIG shock.

Krillo

Hi,

This is interesting for me, since I previously have disliked mesh heads, and I am still on ddrums w. regular heads. This makes me feel I will keep it that way. (Maybe getting the module and hihat at some point) I would suggest you try Billy Blast Ballistec II. They are actually 3-ply, they feel OK on some 8" toms I have, but I don't use them at the moment.

digitalDrummer has done thorough testing of mesh heads, comparing various makes on acoustic level, response, rebound, etc. To date, we've tested 13 different heads - and will do three more in the February 2012 issue.

the new blastech 3 ply would be so sweet if you  tested it. also what we could use is a reference to the 2box mesh heads?. because if you say that the rebopund is 2.2 for instance, we do not know if it is more or less to the 2box mesh heads... real drum heads do we know what rebound they have? approximatelly? so that we know which mesh head is nearer to the feel of a real drum head?

thank you
