BURNIN AMBITION

hello lads. i just set up my new 2box. it is mk2 but with the mk1 kick pad.(why the hell they do that noone knows)

first of all everything seemed to work excellent apart from the kick pedal. even the hi-hat didnt need calibration. i mean i dint calibrate it and it was corresponding fine. when i opened it, i saw the icon with the hi hat openning. and when i closed i saw the icon closing.
but the kick drum was bad. very bad. was so silent...i had to change the curve to max2. otherwise is so silent almost non existent
i hate that. seems that now the kick bad is extremely loud even if i just press it. and i had to max also the volume of the kick pad to 24.so now everything is in normal sound and the kick is so loud...how can i correct this? same as with closed hi hat. i had to make the volume up a bit...

another question is to why the metronome always has the fist quarter being more loud. i dont like that and i dont see it canbe changed.
another thing is that i thought it had a normal usb slot so i could plug in a memory stick in, to play a song from there and i can put drums on it.

any ideas on these topics?

i am really late to work so i will add more to this thread in about 4 hours. but until then ihope someone ca help me with the kick volume. i am thinking of callin  the greek provider. you think they could help or even i could send the kick pad for a replacement as it isnt working as expected?

ps. i have the snare mesh, really tight. is ther a possibility it could break? i also saw in the faq that it should be tight... but i am a bit afraid. thanx

Hi BA and welcome to the forum.  You can use a combination of the settings to fix the bass drum issue.  Set the volume level for all the sounds the same at first.  Now increase the gain setting for the bass drum and the sound should become louder.  Once it starts to sound natural, adjust the curve setting to see what feels best.  You can also change the trigger type from kick1 to kick 2 I think, that may also alter the trigger levels.

Because the MKI pad uses a lot of foam padding, the trigger may not be picking up your hits well enough either.  You can however modify the bass drum to be MKII, but I'm not sure whether you would want to do that - your dealer should really provide you with a MKII replacement or modification.  I sent my pad to the distributor and they did the modification for me so you could try that.

PS - You can tighten the snare up plenty on this kit so don't worry.  The shells will only tighten so much anyway I think so you should be fine.

thanx mate for the answers

i came from work a while ago and played again with the settings. now i have the kick in pos2. i have gain in 24 and threshold in -36. it triggers good, and i have once again dynamics. i would love it to trigger a bit better but i can see the imporvement now. i have it in kick 2. what did really the difference is to change the kit. i chose kit number 30 and it sounded so much better. still i would like it to be even more sensitive but that cant be done. id like to remove the foam if this helps but i do not want to void the guarantee. you think i should call them and tell them my low triggering problem? shall i demand a replacement of the kick? should i demand a mk2 kick stand instead of a mk1?

also 2 more things.
can i somehow make the metronome not make the sound of the first quarter louder than the other quarters? i hate it

last thing is this. i didnt need to calibrate the hi hat. works ok as it shows. it is picking up the open closed mid open etc positions.but i dint calibrate it. and i tried to do it but i cant figure it out. the instructions on the official site is for 1.04 version. can someone help in this?

anyway after some hours i am now very happy. i was pissed off in the morning but since the kick now works even if not as well as i wanted, i can say i am so happy!!!

ah ok my last question is this.

i will tomorrow buy a usb cable to connect 2box with my pc.
wil lthis cable work fine to also record to pc what i am playing? or do i need midi cables? for connection to my pc and doing various jobs through the pc do i need some other cable or the usb cable will suffice? thank you very very much guys

ps, since i am noob in drumming, cymbal 1 is the crash or cymbal2?

I don't use the 2Box metronome, so I haven't played enough with it. I just checked the manual and it seems that you may change the time signature but not the first beep on each bar.

Nop, it's only for data exchange.

Midi will only send a signal to the computer. It doesn't send audio through it. You will need a Virtual instrument (Superior Drummer, AZ Drums or others), which is actually nested to you DAW. Then the midi signal will be interpreted and assigned a sampled sound within this Virtual Instrument. The other way (the one I use), is to get mixer with a USB/FW interface, which actually send the audio signal to the DAW to be recorded.

That depends on the way you connect the cables to the module. The easiest way to recognize'em is simply to press the botton label as CYMB 1 in your module and check what it's. Anyway, you can modify everything later on.

thanx mate

hi hat is calibrated now. but i notice that when the hi hat is half open, then when i press it down i dont hear a sound. i hear it only when i have it from full open to close

so in order to record me, i need a midi cable and the siftware. the cable wil have to be midi to usb right? and i connect the usb to pc am i correct?

last question and i wont bother you people any more.

if i want to play on an mp3 track,  and hear it through the headphones that i also hear the 2 box sounds, how do i do that? do i need a special usb stick to plug it in the brain? or is it just impossible so i have to play the track through my pc and hear it from the pc speakers?
any way to put a plyalong song in the brain and listen to it from headphones and play on top of it?

tahnx a lot guys you are a very helpful forum

oh my god. this that i am about to tell is strange. i checked the official site and says that some 2boxes with specific serial numbers may face freezes etc and that it is due to faulty memory card
mine is affected even though it is brand new
if i open it isnt the quarantee voided? though 2box says we can open it by oureslves? should i tell themto send me a new card?
should i change the card (since the box will be opened), with a larger capacity one?
i am pretty puzzled right now

Only if you encounter a problem.  If you don't then the card may be fine.  Replacing it is easy if it comes to that, there are instructions on how to do this on the official 2Box website.

Sorry, I haven't experienced that issue. Try to change the kit (with a different HH), and see if you have the same behavior.

Yep, A simple 20 bucks cable will do the job, however, you gotta be aware that the virtual instruments is more expensive, and you'll be 'recording' are the samples of that soft. I still thinking it's better to get a mixer (also for live situations)...but whatever floats your boat man (mostly if you might find a 'reduced price' software 8))

If you have an ipod (or mp3 player), you can get an audio cable stereo with a 3.5mm plug in one tip an a 6.3mm in the other, something like this:
then you connect the 3.5mm plug to you player and the 6.3mm to the input line on the back of your module (it's below the headphone jack), and there you go!

oh my god i have so many questions. please be patient with me. ok now that i have established the usb connection, i want to transfer things in the brain. first question.
if i want to just add samples, for example i want to add the walnut samples from the official site
do i just copy the correct samples dsnd samples in the correct folders, for example i put each tom sound in the tom folder?
can i have them categorised in a subfolder? for example if i create a subfolder that is named walnut toms, inside the tom folder of the brain, if i put the samples in the newly created subfolder, will it work?
in the cymbal folder it has many subfolders. so for instance, i have to put a china sample, in the china subfolder. if i accidentally put a crash sample in the china subfolder, the only problem will be that i will have a china sounding like a crash?

my most serious question. i downloaded the apollo 440 drum set samples.
but i dont know where to put them. i thought they would be just one file, but it is many files like the way walnut samples were.

but how do i create this apollo 440 drumset? i dont know where to put it. do i have to put each apollo 440 samples in the correct folder? will then the brain "see" the apollo 440 set? or not? how can i make the brain to see it?

also if i donload play-along mp3s, in which folder should i put em in so that i can play on them/?

also i see tha tthe tennis ball beater isnt as snappy as i would like it to be. if i change it with a pearl eliminator beater, will i damage the mesh head?
if i use this

  TDRUM PROTECTION DOT BASS DRUM

http://www.thomann.de/gr/tdrum_protection_dot_bass_drum.htm

will the mesh be safe?

May I ask why dayawanna do that? If you just like the look of the MKII I understand it, but do u understand that eventually it doesn't represent a huge enhance in terms of audio?, some people claims better playability, but so far I'm happy with mine...and its light makes the kit to look awesome.

Quote
it was written nowhere... i was lucky!!!!
:-\ weird.....last time I checked....it was written on  page 35 of the manual (for which, BTW I gave you the link above)

yep  ;D, piece of cake!

Quote
how do i create this apollo 440 drumset?

This is done with the kit editor, this is the download link: http://www.2box.se/Pages/editor.html

And here is its user manual: http://www.2box.se/Downloads/Quickstart-editor-1.0.1.pdf

Quote

You won't have a china sounding like a crash...you'll have a Crash, period. It's like you have a folder named Excel, in which you want to place your *.xlsx files, if by mistake you place a Doc *.docx file you won't end up by having a spreadsheet looking like a document, just simply have a Doc in a folder supposed to hold Excel files. What are the implications for this...virtually none, except that your organizing system failed and probably finding that Doc file will be a mess.

Here is the same, you have the folder organized in such a way that it would be easy to find your dsnd files.

Quote
yet another question. after playing for about 2 hours i noticed that the plug of the brain that was in the lectricity socket, got really really hot. should i worry guys?

whatdaya mean? hot like you can't even touch it, or hot as another adapter (e.g. a computer charger)? - If the former, then I'd worry, if the latter..well it's normal  ;)

Quote
if i change it with a pearl eliminator beater, will i damage the mesh head?
if i use this   TDRUM PROTECTION DOT BASS DRUM
That depends on how hard beater you are, it's like on acoustic kits, some people destroy the heads quite easily, other ones don't have that problem. I have both Mapex beater and TDRUM protector, however, when I used just the mapex beater I didn't notice any wear out either.

Quote
oh my god i have so many questions. please be patient with me

As I told you before, it's not a problem; however, IMHO I think you should first sit down and READ the manual, then understand what is the instrument you have about. Once you have experienced and read (manual and other threads) and you don't find your question solved, start a new thread or similar. I personally understand your excitement about your new 2Box, but I really think you should take it easy, and first document yourself. For instance, most of the answer to your questions on this thread were / are in the manuals, for pete sake, they're not that long for not reading them, are they?

---N.B. Please don't get my comment wrong, I'd try to help you as much I my knowledge allows me, but please force yourself to find the answers beforehand. Probably it's professional deformation. As I'm a researcher, that's the path I follow for everything in my life.
