Title: Sabian Fierce 13" hihat
Post by: Krillo on March 02, 2012, 12:51:08 PM
Hi all,

Here's a Sabian Fierce 13" hihat that I sampled using an vintage AKG D202 coaxial / dual-driver dynamic mic. There is a little analog EQ applied, but still a very natural sound with some mid growl which these hats have acoustically. I recorded it in the same fashion as the hihat files on the 2box site. The file has 5 levels of open-ness edge (shank) and 4 levels of open-ness bow (tip) and foot splashes. The file is 32-bit float, 44.1kHz mono. File size is 78,7MB

Thanks for the kind words :)
I actually downloaded the tool for making dsnd's but since I don't yet have the 2box module, it seemed like a lot of work for me... It should be fairly easy for someone familiar with the process though. I was doing the samples for my ddrum, and I thought I'd make a file appropriate for making dsnd's. I will give it a shot, but I think someone else will beat me to it and hopefully post it in this thread :)

hm...

The DrumIt Five Editor wants separate files for every hit  :-\ I thought that wasn't necessary.
The Dsoundtool needs Java installed and I'm not so keen on installing that.
Manfred did the Yamaha snare pretty quick, maybe he could help...

Why?  Every PC should have Java runtime installed. http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp (http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp).  It won't do any harm whatsoever.

Was responding to Krillo, but bear in mind Burnin that none of us could make .dsnd files at first, you have to keep trying and do as much reading and learning as you can, and eventually you will be able to do it if you try.  Its really quite easy once you have done a few, and you get better as you go.

As for this .wav file, there is no way to identify which parts of it are for which layers - if you want a file made, you need to be able to identify the edge, tip and bow hits, and identify the layers.  One file with all the hits is fine, but you would need to provide a single .wav file for each sample set (e.g. 25 bow hits in one file, 25 edge hits in another etc...).

Hi Krillo -

thanks for this.  I'm very interested to hear how it sounds.  Hi-hats are where packs like SD and
BFD seem to struggle to offer samples to equal the effectiveness of the other kit pieces.

Soon as I've made a .dsnd I'll post it up somewhere.

Many thanks for sharing.

One really easy way is to listen to the file. If you don't hear any difference go buy a Roland kit. ::)
Another idea is to ask me. As for you first OT-question - I don't have any use for Java.

Thats very helpful Krillo lol.  I've already had a Roland kit and sold it for a 2Box.

Seeing as you're new on this forum, I'll ignore your sarcastic and childish response and focus on the issue.  If you didn't have a use for Java in Windows (if that is what you are running) then why are you trying to run DSoundTool?  It requires Java, therefore if you want to use DSoundTool, you do have a use for Java on your system.

As for the files, my point was that its much easier for people to make .dsnd files when the samples are labelled, and not just lumped together in one file.  Example:

Sabian 13" Hi-Hats sampled from SD 2.0:

Zone 3: Bow Open 32 samples
Zone 3: Bow 83% Open 32 samples
Zone 3: Bow 66% Open 32 samples
Zone 3: Bow 50% Open 32 samples
Zone 3: Bow 33% Open 32 samples
Zone 3: Bow 16% Open: 32 samples
Zone 3: Bow Closed: 32 samples

Zone 8: Edge Open 32 samples
Zone 8: Edge 83% Open 32 samples
Zone 8: Edge 66% Open 32 samples
Zone 8: Edge 50% Open 32 samples
Zone 8: Edge 33% Open 32 samples
Zone 8: Edge 16% Open: 32 samples
Zone 8: Edge Closed: 32 samples

Zone 9: Foot Splash: 32 samples

Total samples = 480

Thats a lot of samples to manage and no one wants to wade through hundreds of them - it takes much more work to put together.  Obviously your file is a lot less samples, but it helps to organise them for packaging in DSoundTool or the official editor nonetheless.

But we have to convert that wav file into dsnd file for playing it with the drumit 5 module.
So for each thing we need a wav file, so for open hihat semi open hihat close hihat ect..
1 hihat wav file can not work.

Anyway thank you.

Ok I've made a .dsnd, havn't played it yet but it sounds good on my laptop.

So - where can I upload it to share?  It's a 67mb file.

:patbat2box:

PS - Roel, you just have to split the file into separate chunks first

i guess he has to upload it first. mediafire is a good host for these things.

Here is a link.

http://www.filefactory.com/file/c4b0b67/n/Sabian_Krillo_v2.dsnd

Had trouble with the foot splash samples so I used the closed edge sounds (foot chick).

How did I do it?

Take wav from Krillo.
Open in editing software like Sound Forge or Audacity (free).
Within wav, sample hits are all in consecutive sequences.
So split the wav into a number of smaller wav files - one wav for each sample type...
I.E. - one wav file for all the closed edge hits, soft to loud, for example, and so on....
Re-name each small wav so you know what's in it - e.g. "Edge, fully closed",
"Edge, quarter open", etc, etc, etc

Edit - also convert to 24bit at some stage.  SF has a simple tool in the menu bar that just
converts from one to the other.....  should be same in Audacity.

Now you have (in this case) ten different files.  Each relates to a type of strike, and contains
all the different hits from soft to loud for that type of strike.
Then just make a .dsnd as usual with the DSoundTool.

i tried the Dsound ...

@ krillo : nice sounding hihat , thanx ...

i think it could be improved a bit by adding some more hits ( maybe 10 or so)  and also one more opened layer .... but it s allready allright ;)

@ Slap :

thanx for converting the file ;)

unfortunatly i ve noticed that on 75%open edge , layer 2 contains 2 hits ....

Yes thanks for sharing these great sounds Krillo.  Really love all that "growling" texture in the
open hits!

I think I'll redo the .dsnd and fake up some extra hits to tidy things up a bit.
And fix the duff layers if I can.  Was having similar trouble with the foot splashes
even though I manually inserted 1 second silences between each hit.

.... so if you spot anything else wrong in the next few days let me know.

And just for the hell of it - what would I have done differently for my own personal tastes ?   ;)

Well, since you're asking.......

I'm guessing the hats were recorded as set up, but I would have liked a set of closed hits with the
hats locked down tighter for a more clipped sound option.

And a set of hits that were fully open and free to decay for much longer - this last point because
for me, the classic open to closed hihat sound works much better with the electronic module when
the more fully open hits have longer decay times..... something to do with the way the module
operates to truncate the sound when the pedal is closed perhaps.....

The decay times are always very short in both SD and BFD (hihats this is) which might be better for programming but not so much for 2box files

But hey, these are just preferences.

Cool :)

Now that I know more of how it's done for the 2box, I will keep that in mind the next time around.

does anyone has made a better version of this sample? It sounds very good, only foot splashes doesn't work quite well.

Can anyone put the file to other servers? I am trying to download the file since 1 week :'(
It always says "All free download slots are in use. You can download this file immediately by upgrading to FileFactory Premium. Otherwise, please feel free to try again shortly." I hate this kind of sites...
