Yeah, thanks Manfred. Nice guide!

I've had only partial success so far. Here's what happened.

I ordered a Verbatim SDHC 32GB Class 10 card and this SD extension from ebay.

Well, the extension cable didn't work. And why oh why didn't I test it before I put it in? Incredibly stupid. It is possible that I somehow damaged it when putting the brain together, but I doubt it. So, I decided to go ahead without it, just copy everything to the card and then put it in.

But then, there were issues with the card. Inserted to my iMac, I copied files to it with no evident problems. It showed up as a FAT32 unit with 32 GB to go. But when put it into the 2box brain, the LCD read "unaligned-cluster" and the unit refused to boot.

I figured it had something to do with the formatting, so I re-did it and tried again. Same thing. And when trying to copy some files, my Mac complained about a "finder error -26", which I think is permission related. Just as a test, I put the card in my Nikon camera and formatted it there. Put it back in my computer, copied everything and suddenly, the brain booted and everything seems to work, except accessing it via USB.

Dodgy card, I assume. And dodgy extension cable. Not my lucky day... Well at least I can play all the new sounds...

Update: The seller of the SD extension cable is sending me a new one without any fuzz. Says these things happen and have taken the time to test the one I'm getting now.

Formatting SD cards in Mac and Windows is kind of doggy too. Use this to format SD cards: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/

I don't reckon the quality control will be up to much on a lot of the SD extenders out there.
Mine was 6gbp from Hong Kong as I remember.  Since they were cheap I ordered three,
which turned out to be a good idea as only 1 of the three worked.

Got a nice posh spring loaded one now, courtesy of Jman

I just ordered a SD extension cable on ebay from a UK seller, it has a black flat-cable which is more convenient for a finished look on the module.
I hope my cable will be ok, I will test it first on my iMac.

Ps: thanks for the link GenuineHuman, I will try that one out.

those flat ribbon cables are quite easily damaged, which is probably the weakest point of the mod.

try and make sure that the cable is free to move when the bottom plate is screwed on.

That's one of the sweet coincidences with the fit of the bottom module plate .... there is enough room for the flat cable to slide through without any pinching and no modification to the hardware is necessary.  8)
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

i would say it varies from module to module though. although my cable does slide around okay, it definitely has a sharp bend in it from the module case.

recently i have been getting random "FAT Error" messages when starting my module, and i'm hoping it is just the extender cable that is damaged (when it happens, the error occurs with the stock SD card too). it happened one time when i was playing too, resulting in a nice loud blast of white noise in my headphones...

Hmmmm ... sorry to hear that ...  I've never had that happen, but yeah, obviously cables like this can be vulnerable. I'm a firm believer in keeping backups for all this kinda stuff (backups for my cards, backups for the extenders)  I kept a backup extender for each of my modules, just in case I ever need it ... I should have kept a few when I bought that lot of em ... that was my plan ... but I kept getting PM's asking if I had one more .... and I was soft-hearted ...  ;)

thanks a lot for all your comments, but I meant the place inside of modul , there is place where the card ( and after mod card extender ) is keept firmly in place by two buttress (see the picture : http://www.njnj.de/bilder/SD_Mod_S05.jpg )
so there is zero space for cabel and cabel is not only bended but pushed even against this buttress. So nobody is paring this buttress away ? so i hope it will keep the pressure and cable stay alive : )

fishmonkey

hi, yes you are right, that is also a possible place where damage to the ribbon cable might occur.
