Holes in bassdrum

Hi there 2box users!

I'm a proud owner of a 2box kit myself but I keep running into the same problem, I continuously make holes in my bassdrum head (standard 2 box mesh pad). The bassdrum head only lasts 2 weeks (I play an hour a day). I've tried different stuff like relocating my pedal so that it doesn't hit the center and replacing the beater, but it doesn't solve the problem. I use an Iron Cobra powerglide single pedal with the felt beater and tbh I don't use that much force. I also don't play heavy metal or anything, just rock/punk/funk.

I'm hoping for some good advice :)

mesh head and felt beater, is not good combination...but you should know that better hehe

Haggis-man

I agree with not using a felt beater, it will wear through the head really quickly. If you really need to use a felt one then put a bass drum patch over the area to stop the wear.

Familiar… lol

You  are Not going  believe it, I had a long post about same problem at my snare…

You can check the post at the general section look for the post " what going on with my snare machhead "

For me â€" I had a problem with the foam â€" but I had a lot of headache till we found the cause

Anyway I think that it will be better to have an original beater (for the MK2 model) â€" it's like a soft tennis ball

I could try using a rubber head again, but I had a feeling it landed much harder on the mesh head (causing more damage). Maybe it'll do the trick. If not, the mesh heads aren't that expensive ;-)

Try the mini tennis ball and the 628 meshheads for 2Box ... they seem to be very good according to other posts on this forum.

snare holes have nothing to do with kick holes. the felt doesnt behave well with the mesh. so you should use a falam.now avoid remo as they are too noisy. basically all of them are a bit noisy but are the loudest. i am using 2ply roland mesh with falam and on top of it i have a clothe my mother made so that i eliminate bit of the bouncing and noise and is awesome

Exactly, this is what I'm using, with a normal ordinary drumbeater. Still going strong. With the lighter new mkII bassdrum I prefer a normal drumbeater instead of the tennisbal. The 628 quite loosened in combination with the Pearl beater is not to bouncy in my opinion. Yes and I to slammed through the orginal head after one month of playing.

I ordered a 2BOX - Mesh Head 14 inch from 628 today. Will start experimenting with tennis-ball and normal beaters. It is fun to pimp the 2box.

The head came in and I had some time so I put it on the bass pad and it rocks. Tried a normal beater first *(felt and plastic head) and after an hour or so I put the tennis-ball back and what do you think? Perfect!

The 628 mesh is double layered. To my amazement replacing the original head by this one improved the bass volume as well. I cannot say if this is because of the double layer or a better installation then the factory head but the sound quality improved. The Cube Beech bass was a bit soft and fluffy and now it speaks out in the spectrum of sounds.

I'm happy!

Murgen do you have a photo of it? I'am thinking to buy those 628 mesh heads for my 2 bassdrums.

The white spot is caused by me playing with a felt beater for 30 minutes.

For the past 9-10 years I have been using a Kick patch on every mesh head kick I have owned. I have never put a hole in one of my kicks. The first mesh kick I owned I started to see a little wear. After reading forums waaaay back then I decided by those recommendations that a kick patch is a must. My feeling is no matter what beater you plan to use add a kick patch. They are inexpensive compared to a new mesh head. I've even seen stock rubber kick pads with holes in them at Guitar Center.

There are plenty of choices out there. The one I have been using for almost 10 years is this one:

It makes no noise and you can't feel any dif between using the patch or striking the head without it, but it protects the mesh. There are single or double pedal styles.
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

i also use the same patch jman, but it does make noise. and an ugly one as well. arethere different evans patches?when my rubber beater hits the patch thereis an awful plastic-like sound. i hate it. thank god i also use my moms cloth on the mesh head so the sound isnt that annoying...

I guess this is one of those cases where people's perception of noise or sound can be totally different! Like I say I've been using the same patch for close to 10 years and it has never been bothersome or noisy to me in the least. In this video at 4 min. 4 seconds I demo the acoustic noise of the 22" mesh kick with that patch...... I should have said the noise would never bother anybody, except BURNIN AMBITION  ;D I doubt you will find anything quieter than your mom's custom cloth cover though....
