Would you be interested in a Mac version of SDSE? (only vote if you are a Mac user)

Yes, a Mac version is a must for me
I would but I already use the Windows version on my Mac or notebook
No, free solutions like Boot Camp or VirtualBox are enough, keep the focus on supporting VSTs

digitalDrummer

Quick question for anyone using this with a Mac and virtualised Windows: if I were to instal Windows using Parallels or similar, would I have to reinstall all my VSTs and Reaper in Windows or could SDSE access the Mac versions?

Lustar

What you would need for sure is Reaper for Windows and the Windows versions of the VST programs.

Then, it may be possible to share the folders where you have already installed the sounds if they are the same on Mac and Windows. If the sound libraries are exactly the same and the folder can be shared (you may have to move the sounds to an external drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS or install HFS drivers on Windows) you would just need to install Reaper and the programs for SD2/BFD2/AD (without the sound libraries) then set the path to your shared folder with the sound libraries in each of those VSTs.

To use SDSE on a virtual Windows it will certainly not work with something like the Unity view of VMware Fusion but it should work with a single window or full screen mode. Another solution is to use Bootcamp if it's available on your Mac.

digitalDrummer

Thanks for that. I was hoping to avoid installing everything again and have duplicates on the same computer, so I think I'll just have to find a Windows machine!!

fishmonkey

you don't need a Windows machine.

as Lustar says, you should be able to just install the plug-ins and point them to your existing sample folders. this would definitely work with Parallels, which gives you access to your Mac filesystem in Windows. i'm pretty sure Fusion would have the same kind of thing.

Jman you tested a lot of sample packs on your 2box module, wich one you think are the best sample packs to have?

Do you have some video demo's from your latest samples?

My personal favorites: My favorite snares have come from the original SD2 pack.... I love the Black Beauty, GMS Maple Ash and the GMS NirZ snares .... SD2 Metal Foundry ... it has a huge number of drums, Sonors I think are my favs. BFD 2 is great even without expansions IMO, I still prefer the Vistalite kits I built from BFD2 the best of all Vistalites I've tried and that goes for several Vistalite kits I have from other packs. There are only 3 Vlite toms in the original but it is easy to get more out of it.... I use 5 toms and tuned up the highest tom and tuned down the lowest tom to get the 2 additional tom sounds. Evil Drums also excellent IMO especially the Pork Pie drums.
BFD2 ..... The Zildjian Gen16 sample packs, definitely my favorite cymbals.

Those would be my top I think. After that .... BFD2 .... John Emrich's Yamaha kits are very nice and I just got the JEX kit and like that one too. John's has sticks, brushes (or rods Oak kit) and mallets in his kits.
SD2 Roots .... nice jazz kit IMO ... more raw/unprocessed sounding kit from Superior.

I haven't done much as far as new video demos for a while, and do have more new kits like the JEX kit most recently, but I do have demos up on Youtube:

I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

The Percussion pack is already supported actually, it just wasn't in the list :)
You can export from BFD2 expansion packs that are not listed as supported with the current SDSE version but you won't get the corrected instrument names.

If anyone wants support for more packs please send me a message and I'll add them.

When you create dnsd files from BFD2  what the ambience  parameters are setting you, normally?

OH send?
Room send?
Amb3 send?
I like "dry" sounds, and you?

Lustar

You'll probably want to lower those channels. There's a topic on the FXpansion forums about it here
I'm sorry that I can't help you much more but I'm also interested if anyone has tips about good BFD2 settings.

This would be a good topic for a separate thread, since the variations you can create are seemingly endless. Besides the parameters you list which are on your Kit page within the mixer there are tons of choices. If you just load your instruments with the orig SDSE Reaper file you are starting with a kit without a lot of processing. Generally without adjusting anything I think you get a pretty nice sounding drum to start with. If you raise the direct mics or just leave the direct mics as is while lowering OH, Amb, and Room you will here the dif of a more direct sounding instrument... my best advice would be to just listen and play with the settings. Another thing that is very useful to me is the BFD Presets. If you click on the Load button in the top right corner and then load BFD2 presets you should see a lot of different choices there. Presets are included with the BFD kits and many of the expansions .... for example if you had the Peart pack you will see several preset choices. One of the advantages to the presets is it gives you a reference as far as what was done and added in the mixer section to attain that sound. One of my favorite, almost over the top kits I play a lot is the Vistalite kit I built from BFD2 original pack using the Full on Hvy Rock presets from the DW kit substituting the Vlite toms, kick ... adding Z Digital Vault cymbals with the Artist JM room 1 preset ......... Massive sound....
Like I say your choices are almost limitless. Before buying any expansions to BFD2 I started playing with different versions of the stock kits ..... and you can go on, and on with just that. You do get a huge amount of instruments to work with in BFD2 without adding anything else ... For myself I find the cymbals a bit lacking though mainly because I like the choice of having 3 zones .... there are a few cymbals in BFD2 with bell, bow and edge, but adding the Zildjian Digital Vault cymbal packs is one of the best add ons early IMO, because those cymbals shine, and have Bell, Bow, Edge, sticks, brushes, rods, mallets .... great pack IMO ...  J

thanks Jman!

to Lustar: do you think it's possible to add an option like this:
when, for example, you generate a file of snares, able to generate all snares together?
thanks for your answer
