Please take in account that compared to most other digi-kits the default sounds are very good. But you might get used to it. For me, I'm still blown away by the dynamics on the toms, hats and cymbals.

I never had a ddrum but listened to quite a few videos and I don't think it's better than 2Box... Especially for one obvious reason: a ddrum4SE could only store 20MB of data guys! Wake up! ;)

Puttenvr will say it better , but i think there s no way a Ddrum could sound better ....  i agree too many kits are processed , but it s up to you to make your own kits even with the stock sounds youll find what you need ...

BURNIN AMBITION

exactly. i did a stupid thing today. i deleted one of the 100 dkits. so i decided to put the initial files back in the brain. and i recalibrated everything etc. this gave me the opportunity to listen to all the dkits again. wooow i forgot how many awesome dkits there are. even though i like to use my own dkits (even if i hate that they appear after the 100th kit), i think the best kit there is easily the sad but true kit. even though everyone in the forum is a better drummer than lars, the kit is awesome

They don't have to! I've renamed some of the original kits using the 2box editor (very easy) and then loaded custom sounds onto the renamed kits. So I have all my custom kits as part of the 100 "stock" kits, with the most used ones at the beginning. Obviously, I had to sacrifice some original kits, but there were many that I would never use, so that wasn't an issue. And, since I have all the stock kits saved on the original SD card, I can restore them any time I want.

puttenvr

The recording toms don't sound processed to me. As wel as a lot of snares.

By the way, the kit I mostly use is the Walnut kit (n°4).
I really love the dark tone of the kick and toms.
I just swap the snare (not enough punch) hi hat an ride and here I go.

With the left Kit select dial .... To go to the kits beyond #100 .... Push the left knob before you turn it, you will see the kit number display change and an arrow pointing left. When it is pointing left, turning the dial will move from the 1st 100 kits to the kits after 100. Pushing it again will put things back to normal mode so it goes one kit at a time. When searching through kits over 100 they are in alphabetical order. I have a lot of extra kits, 36 right now, so another cool function ....  when in mode with arrow pointing left it will go to the first kit of each letter, A, B, C, etc. (if your 1st extra kit is Cube Beech, no kits named with A, or B as the first letter in the kit name, Cube Beech will be the 1st +100 kit you see) .... so instead of going one kit at a time through the +100 kits you can skip by letter. So if I want to get to my extra Vistalite kits, I push the button, spin the dial til I get to the first kit under letter V, click the dial again and dial individually to find the kit I want ..... nice time saving function.  J
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

to say the sounds are not as good as the ddrum is
surprising. I haven't purchased the 2box yet, still trying to
put a kit together, but I would have expected the stock
sounds would be better than the ddrum. I know it's an open system, but... Really?
Not all ddrum sounds are better, a lot of those are overly processed too, and even clipped and distorted, for example the Dennis Chambers toms. The Simon Philips toms are extremely compressed. And of course the resolution of the 2box sounds are better, in that there are many more layers. You can't really blame 2box (or clavia) either, the sampling jobs were put out on different studios, and if they do a less than stellar job, then that's the way it will sound.

On one hand "ready-to-go"-processed sounds are good for just plugging in and playing, but in my experience, often times I would make those kinds of desicions during mixing, and if you then don't have the unprocessed sounds, there is not much you can do. If it would have been up to me, I would have included one unprocessed jazz kit and one rock kit, and the rest could have been like it is for those who like those sounds. Here's a comparison of waveformdisplays of the recording toms, and one that I have sampled: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.2773772642906.95908.1815776265&type=3&l=24f231ddf4
you can clearly see how the transient from the recording tom is compressed. When running a sound that has been treated like that through an analog compressor, you don't get the 'whack' from the compressor as you would with a non-compressed sample, since the transient that the compressor triggers on is already gone.
