Title: Latency Solved
Post by: sn47som on October 08, 2016, 03:56:11 AM
Hey guys I finally fixed the latency issues I was having when really laying into the ride, foot splash, kick and toms or with kick and snare all being played at the same time. I have been seeing more latency issues arising for people so here goes. It took 3 changes to make the problem disappear. Follow these 3 things and you should be good to go.

1. Use mesh heads- this was the biggest culprit IMHO. The stock rubber pads are FAR from desirable. I'm using the 682drums mesh and they play 10 times better than the stock rubber, but not quite as good as roland mesh

2. Shorten your sample lengths. shorten the sample length of all the samples you play using a program called dsoundtuner. Typically I set a length between 4-8s depending on the drum/cymbal

3. Xtalk- set your xtalk for all pads played to at least low. I found I achieved better results increasing the setting even more. All my pads are set to medium for xtalk. If you have them set to off you most definitely will produce some xtalk when laying into your playing even if its slight it can cause latency. set to medium. then make sure your threshold for each pad is as low as possible for the largest dynamical range (-48). it should always be as low as possible for greatest playability.

Do all these steps and your 2box kit will be playable again!!

Great post!

I have also seen that latency is added if a pad or cymbal has the wrong trigger type settings...like using a piezo/switch trigger to a 2box channel with piezo/piezo settings etc.

Maybe not a big common problem...but for those who is switching environment often between several different drum setups.

Best regards

So using the dsoundtool,  you've shortened the samples of even the stock sounds? I thought I had would mainly affect new custom sounds but I've found even with stock sounds I was getting it. Does this latency transmit over midi too?
I already use mesh heads. I've put a Mylar one on the snare pad to see if that helps. Will report back tomorrow when I've done a full gig with it. I have also put stalk on all channels to low, but will put it to medium tomorrow and also will lowers the threashold too.
Wish me luck.

but most importantly like on a real drum set the player is the most crucial part to the outcome of a performance whether its live or practicing at home. How you play and hit the drums or pads has the most effect all else equal. Playing with controlled precise hits will yield best results its not just making some settings changes and switching heads. Ones hits and dynamics need to be as precise as possible especially when playing fast on multiple pads at once. Try to play more controlled with less volume in your hits and less velocity and this will instantly improve latency too. Its an adaptation to this kit. This is one area that roland has over the 2box their triggering/processing is a little more advanced. I hope 2box keeps advancing because its not quite great yet but almost.

Sorry i didn't respond sooner on this

no i've never needed to shorten the stock samples because they are already very small samples (files) compared to the better sounding more full sounding samples Ive exported into the module from various vsts. This is the great beauty of the stock samples- they are small files already and sound very good. This makes the stock samples the best playing and triggering samples you will ever get compared to any vst out there that you export samples to the module from. The stock samples play the best and have the least amount of latency. The stock samples are the most enjoyable to play because of this. If you thing is best sound then you'll need to export samples from vsts. if your thing is playability and the least amount of latency possible then use the stock samples!
