Title: E Drumming Live with IEM's
Post by: NewEDrummer on March 20, 2016, 11:07:56 AM
Hi Fellas,
Just a quickie, has anyone that has been playing live us IEM's.
I started with the SURE 215 set but couldn't manage with the over ear fittings and the buds on the ear pieces were awful so I tried a cheap pair of LD Systems ear buds which fit well but as our sound grows and the monitoring has become more detailed this pair have started distorting slightly so I am looking out for a pair of plug ins that don't go over the ear that can reproduce the quality and definition from the different ranges from the bass and the kick drum to the keys and cymbals snare and the vocal , just wondered if anyone has similar needs and found a recommendable solution?
Also if the Sure IEM's, higher up the chain have better fitting because to be honest the sound quality was superb.
Cheers 👍

I started with standard IEM and tried several fittings. But (due to the sweat and overall fit problems) I switched to custom made IEM. Ofcourse they are more expensive but it was the best investment I ever did in terms of monitoring, comfort, sound and hearprotection.

Yeah thanks have pondered on custom made
But not yet, I really enjoyed the sound of the Sures but the fit was awful
I prefer the the push in type as to the wrap around the ear jobs.
Maybe I'll purchase a decent set of push ins at a slightly higher value with good reviews see how it goes.
All the review seem to be for people jogging or cycling etc, not gigging
I find it strange.

Hi!

I thought my Shure Se-215 was terrible before I read the manual..and found out that I had been using the ear-ins on the wrong side of the supposed ear. Then I took some time to really figure and test the right ear buds included in the package. Now I think the se-215 is just perfect...I have also added a pearl throne thumber...which makes you to feel the kick!  Perfect combination!

Best regards

My guitar player uses 215s and I nearly bought a pair, but I'm a skinflint and when I saw good reviews for M6Pro's I bought a pair of them instead (they are half the price of 215s). After trying the included buds I settled on the comfort memory foam ones. They are a bit small (I need to buy the large comfort foam but they are difficult to get in that size in europe), and that means less than perfect isolation, and that also means less bass response. BUT it's still 10x better than using the floor monitors. I just have to keep reminding the other members to speak to me with a mic instead of shouting at me from 5 ft away lol.
The next step up for me will be customs: I will either make a pair myself (I make everything myself these days lol), or once I get a decent paying job again, I'll just get some done properly. If you're serious about hearing what you're playing (and getting 100% enjoyment from it) then it's a no-brainer.

I did that, twice. I made some normal plugs too, but the IEM plugs I made didn't quite work out, before I ran out of material to try again.

Great tip! I've got a nice set of Westone's that have been sitting in the case for years. I never had custom ear molds and the regular foam tips never really cut it. I just ordered the Radians ear mold kit. Hopefully I'll get a whole new perspective with custom molds and my IEMs. Hopefully I'll get it right the first time though..... I'm not much of a sculptor.   ;)

One thing I did different (to the guy on the video's approach) on the second try, instead of moulding the plug first, then round the ear bit, I did it the opposite way around. I found this to get better results than the first way.
Note that different batches of radians does not stick together very well, it creates a kind of seem which will pull apart with a little force. So be careful with that.
I ran out of material before I could perfect this method on a third set.

One thing I did different (to the guy on the video's approach) on the second try, instead of moulding the plug first, then round the ear bit, I did it the opposite way around. I found this to get better results than the first way.

  • Put the ear tips on from the kit which are the best fit for you
  • Insert one IEM into your ear so it's in the right place
  • With some of the radians material press it into the space between your ear and the body of the IEM, making the 'outside' part. Use plenty of material, and get some underneath but dont dislodge the fitting of the IEM.
  • After it's hardened, take out the IEM, and remove the ear tip
  • Make up another small ball of radians material and wrap it around the ear canal pipe on the IEM (use enough so that is a connection between this ball and the previous material). Insert it into your ear. Don't compress it more than it needs to fit your ear canal. You don't want the plastic ear pipes coming into contact with your ear
  • After the material is hardened, remove the IEM, and examine the ear tip part. None of the ear pipe should be showing through the radians
  • Use a sharp knife to trim the ear tip part and make a hole for the sound to exit
Note that different batches of radians does not stick together very well, it creates a kind of seem which will pull apart with a little force. So be careful with that.
I ran out of material before I could perfect this method on a third set.
That makes me wonder if just using the very pliable foam ear tip part plus applying the additional outer Radian mold for sealing off the ear might not be good enough..... not even bothering with the thin Radian coating instead of the foam??

Yeah I had considered making another set, but using the larger Comfort tips that I need plus a shell 'sealer' made from Radians. Might be the best of both worlds.

OK, so I did the ear molds today, ended up throwing out the first one, but had enough to make the set with the remaining material. Not beautiful but they are definitely affective. They work so much better than with just the original universal fit foam. Hey Jman, so do you prefer these now, or did you switch back to something else?

It's what I am using now. They work well. With the foam tips it works fine, takes a second to compress the foam tip to get the plug seated in the ear, which is fine, but makes me wonder if these would be more ideal for me as far as tips go next time: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Clear-Earbuds-Tips-for-Westone-1-2-3-4-4R-UM1-UM2-UM2-RC-UM3-UM3-RC-UM3X-UM3x-RC-/221206670926?hash=item3380f1ee4e:g:EsAAAMXQCtlRUxg3

I got some of those double and triple-flange tips with my M6's. They work, but I thought that they were not so comfortable. I think the memory foam (Comforts) work better. It's all subjective though...

Some great chat guys and tips 👍
I finally settled on Sure 425's they are leaps and
Bounds more suitable than the 215's
No fitting issues loads of different plugs and bungs to attach depending
On the size of your lug holes and the sound is
Incredible I have keys guitars and a little vocal
Dribbled in as a guide then beautiful sounding
Drums crystal clear and because the noise cancelling works so
Well I can lower the volume and protect my
Lug holes.
Thanks for the tips n tricks guys :)

I changed the ear tips to the clear small flanged tips on those ones I built the DIY molds for earlier in the thread. They work perfect for me now. My ear is sealed off nicely, sounds great. For me I was having trouble with the foam tips because the IEMs were falling out of my ears and it was a bit of a hassle to get them in and seated just right. But with the flanged ear tips along with the custom molds ..... I can just stick em in and they fit snug, and stay....

FWIW, I use Alien Ears custom-molded IEMs. They are incredible! I purchased the 4-driver version at around $400. They sound fantastic and the fit is perfect. Huge fan!
