Drumit Three sd card mod

I have made sd card mod on Drumit Three without using a heat gun.

In essence I follow all steps suggested on JMan post about sd card mod on Drumit 3, but I don't used any heat gun (I don't own any). I simply lifted the motherboard on the side that has card slot, just enough to extract sd card, and replaced it with the extender card. It was very easy and fast. Everything works perfectly!!!

Obviously, any mod similar is done at your own risk.

Good to know that it lifted easily on the card side without applying heat!
I was not sure how much affect or help the heat was as after heating the top of the case I did like you..... just lifted the board on the card side enough to exchange the card for the extender. So basically you just remove the bottom of the module case. And then remove all the screws that hold the board and knobs from the front ...... very similar to the instructions for doing that with the Drumit Five. The one difference is you don't completely remove the board. You just carefully lift it on the Card side ..... just enough to remove the card and replace it with the extender/card.
I could tell you where to stick that piezo! :D ;)

Did you test the card in the extender before putting the module back together? Because that was the one part that threw me off a bit. I posted this earlier: When I tested the card in the slot with the module open I got a NO USB connection type msg. on the screen, no boot. However, after I installed one of the screws that hold the board to the top case everything booted like normal with the module open. So I assume the screw is needed for grounding the board .....

Fortunately I read your post about sd card mod before opening my drumit module. Thanks to your help, I installed one of the board screws before any testing.

Thanks! I don't think I would have had the courage to make sd card mod without reading your post.

And now we know it is not necessary to heat the top of the module. That makes the process at least a little safer! Still, as I mentioned as well as you ..... this is definitely DO AT OWN RISK! And as we know, anything that can go wrong ..... eventually will go wrong! LOL Although, with the Drumit Five at least I don't know of anyone that reported messing up their module doing the Card Mod .....  :)

I have an ad for the complete card mod kit, now for both the Drumit Five and the Drumit Three ... plug n play .... if interested. J http://www.2box-forum.com/index.php/topic,1445.msg13571.html#msg13571

Probably I am just being blind, but I cannot find the initial post mentioned above from JMan on doing the mod on Drumit3 ... Could you point me there?

@Jman: Thanks!

So I can report that the mod went well, nothing broken, no one electrocuted.

Some findings that might be useful:

I used a small lever to lift the PCB on the SD card side (the "lever" was actually the bow of my glasses .. there might be more professional tools than that, but I would steer clear anything metallic). It is not needed for force but it gave perfect control on the movement of the board, you can lift exactly as far as is needed without any twist or torsion which might reduce the risk of breaking something)

As the PCB cannot be fully lifted anyways, there is no need to remove the screws on the opposite side of the SD card. That way the board remains grounded and you can test booting the module right away without reinserting any screws.

And finally, I did the mod without first copying the OS to the 32 GB card. In that situation the module reports "No OS found" and "USB disconnected" so that I thought that the card was not compatible. But after copying the OS to the card, everything worked well .. I will play and test for a few weeks and then post into the "compatibility thread"

Hey guys! Thanks for the links, photos and tips. I got my 32 gb SD card from Zourman, (pre-formated and loaded up; Thank you Anders!) for my Drumit 3 and it was easier than I thought it would be. Just needed the Torx screwdriver, a phillps screw driver, an adjustable wrench and a piece of 2 sided Gorilla tape. It's good to go... 8)

Hi there,

I did the card mod for my DrumIt three as described by Jman and Walse (I just had to lift up the motherboard and was able to replace the SD-card with the extender.
I also fixed the motherboard with a srew (in fact I tried all) but I still got the messages:
FAT error
No OS
USB Disconnected

I first tried the original SD card from the module. After that I tried a 32 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s U3 which one user posted worked fine with his DrumIt Three.
Here I got the message that the OS is loading but nothing happens. It does not load. Newest OS (1.6.3) is on both cards. Both are formatted in FAT32.
I tried the SD card extender on my PC, it worked.
If I put back the original card in the module it's working again.

I don't know what's wrong here. Maybe someone can help me...

Edit: OK in the meanwhile I found out myself. The problem is not the extender card. The original SD card which was in the module is not working in the extender (what's kind of annoying btw...) and so does not the 32 GB SanDisk Extreme Pro 95 MB/s. I tried one of my old SD cards (32 GB SanDisk Extreme U1 10 45 MB/s) which I used for my digital camera some time ago and that worked! After that I tried a 32 GB SanDisk Extreme PRO 100 MB/s and this one worked, too! I can't say anything about longer usage, I just found out. But for now I have not experienced any lags, dropout or anything like that.

Hi. An sd card extender cable (if used)  is asking for trouble, the data lines dont have return path / ground plane underneath as on a pcb, and they are often pretty long, so real bad for signal integrity.
So haphazard behaviour expected, may work, may not.
Best, Deve.
