quick question about out jacks

till now, i recorded drums using an mp3 player i have, connected to to the microphone jack

my bassist asked if i could have in one out jack, just the cymbals, and in another out jack, all the rest (toms snare, kick)
can it be done? and how will i collect all the cymbals?
i have the brain connected to the pc via midi but i am noob in this...
any help or point to a specific topic is appreciated.

Hi.
On the UNIT-INTF page set BUS to 3 or 3+4  for all cymbal channels and 5 or 5+6 for all others. Bus 3 4 5 6 are always on output 3 4 5 6.

I've been recording pretty much like you at first but was never happy with the mix. Now I'm recording through midi and then record each track individually in stereo. It takes some more time to record, but the quality is better and you have better control over the drum track. If you already midi interface, go midi. And I'm not using BFD, Superior Drummer etc., 2Box module has all the sounds I need.

id really like some more info on this my friend. i already have connected my 2box brain via midi with my pc. but after that, how can i record? what software do i need?if i understand well i have to play the track many times so that each time a specific tom ro cymbal is being recorded? i can do that but if you could explain the process with details would be awesome. my first track recorded with 2box and only 2box sounds. it sounds so amazing!!!1thanx

I use Reaper (www.reaper.fm). I can't really remember the details on how I set up my midi interface but it's not a rocketscience. I'm sure you can find some help online, maybe even specifically for your midi interface. Reaper's help also covers this topic. Basically you just have to setup midi interface in preferences, then you add midi track and you record a midi drum track. Once you have this down, you add an instrument track, connect 2Box outputs to your soundcard inputs and you record actual sounds.

You don't have to play drums again and again, unless you're not happy with your playing (you can also edit midi track and correct mistakes or alter the drum track there),  but yes, you do have to replay midi track to record actual sounds several times if you want each drum sound recorded individually.

Maybe it seems complex to you at this point but you will have this setup in no time and once you go through this process of recording and editing you will see how much better your drum tracks can sound, because you can EQ your kick drum to be more bassy or punchy, compress cymbal sounds individually, decrease or increase volume of hi-hat and ride, add reverb to snare and toms etc. And the best thing is (sometimes also the worst) you can alter all those settings endlessly while keeping your dry recording intact.

all is well i think apart rom a question. i have connected the rbox brain with my pc using a cable that is midi in-out (2midis) from one end and the other end is usb. is that ok? or i need something else? thank you


edit, ok i saw your other post. seems very straight forward. my cable is alright. in the page you posted, it says that i must put the midi in from the cable to the midi in of the brain. is that 100% correct? as i have read in numerous sites in the past that it actually has to be tyhe opposite....

For recording it's 2Box midi out to midi in on your interface and for playback (if you want to use 2Box module sounds) it's the other way around.

EDIT: Remember, when you record you have to connect 2Box outputs to your sound card inputs. If you're using 3+4 outputs you set a drum you record to 3+4 in the UNIT-INF as Deve Loper said and the others you don't want to record at that time to something else.

no luck. i tried either have the midi input of the cable to midi output of the brain and vice vers. no luck
i put asio in the preferences as was stated in the pdf manual. usb midi interfaced was enabled and showed up. i chose channel 10. no matter what i do, after i arm the recording, there is no signal. iam so dissapointed. am i missin something here?

ah hell....
my bassist asked btw something simpler if midi is all so fucked up. he asked that if i record with my mp3 player, if i can put all cymbals in left channel and everything else on right channel. at least, is this doable?
even though id rather record midi....

You can set cymbals to output 3 and the rest to output 4, then plug those two mono outputs to mono-to-stereo adapter and adapter to mp3 recorder.

But midi really should work. Select all channels in Reaper. If you only have one midi device connected it won't matter if you select all channels. You also have to setup routing. I will connect MIDI and write down my settings. Maybe that will help.

I don't think it matters if you have 2Box module connected with USB, module is not in USB mode anyway. Well, here are three pictures that show my setup. My midi interface is m-audio midiman.

1. First you enable MIDI device

2. Then you add a track and select input. I selected all channels as I only record one midi at a time. My 2Box module is setup to Channel 1 (UNIT-INTF) meaning I have to select either channel 1 or all channels.

3. You arm the track and start recording. No picture here. That button next to I/O on track must be RED.
4. To playback and record you must setup MIDI output. Click I/O to open routing window and select your MIDI interface that will send signal to 2Box module.

5. Add new track, select input from your soundcard, connect outputs from 2Box module to your soundcard inputs, configure 2Box module to send drum sound to whatever output you wish (ie. 3+4) and record. Don't forget to disarm MIDI track. Reaper will send signal to 2Box module through MIDI interface and record sound (wave) to this new track captured from 2Box module. You can also record directly to your mp3 recorder if you connect 2Box outputs directly to mp3 player.
